About The Role

The HSE Manager ANZ provides strategic leadership to embed health, safety and environmental excellence into the Smurfit Westrock business. This role drives cultural change, strengthens critical risk governance, and partners with leaders to build capability and accountability. Through data-driven insights and proactive engagements, the HSE Manager ensures compliances, foster innovation, and delivers continuous improvement in safety performance and organisational resilience.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Champion Safety Leadership across the business
    1. Drive a culture where safety is a core business value by inspiring leaders and teams to embed proactive safety behaviours into every-day decision making


  • Elevate Leadership Capability in Safety
    1. Partner with leaders to build safety leadership skills, ensuring accountability for risk management and continuous improvement at all levels


  • Shape a Positive, Forward-Looking Safety Culture
    1. Influence the attitudes and behaviours to create an environment where safety innovation and engagement are embraced as drivers of operational excellence


  • Lead strategic HSE Initiatives
    1. Direct & govern key safety programs, committees and change initiatives that strengthen compliance and deliver measurable improvements in performance


  • Embed Critical Risk Governance
    1. Ensure robust systems and controls for high-consequence risks are implemented, verified and continuously improved to protect people and assets.


  • Drive Incident Learning & Organisational Resilience
    1. Oversee ICAM-style investigations and ensure lessons learned are translated into systemic changes that prevent recurrences


  • Govern Compliance and Assurance Frameworks
    1. Lead audits, regulatory reporting and governance processes to maintain full compliance and position the business as a trusted partner to customers and regulators


  • Leverage Data and Insights for Continuous Improvement
    1. Use analytics and trend reporting to identify emerging risks, inform strategic decisions, and drive targeted improvement initiatives


  • Champion Injury Management and Wellbeing
    1. Provide leadership in workers' compensation and return-to-work strategies, ensuring timely resolution and a focus on employee health and resilience


  • Build Organisational Capability Through Training
    1. Set the strategic direction for safety education, ensuring leaders and teams are equipped with the knowledge and skills to manage risk effectively


Critical Education, Qualifications & Experience:

  • Tertiary qualification - Degree in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline
  • Manufacturing Experience - Exposure to complex production environments and operational risk management
  • Incident Investigation Accreditation - ICAM or similar
  • Auditing Competency - WHS auditor qualification with experience in ISO 45001 and ISO 14001
  • Strong background in risk assessments and investigations
  • Legislative Knowledge - Strong understanding of WHS legislation, codes of practice and regulatory frameworks
  • Risk Management Expertise - Proven ability to govern critical risk controls and lead risk assessments.
  • Senior Leadership Experience - Demonstrated success influencing executive teams and leading safety strategy at a senior level.
  • Change Management Capability - Experience driving cultural transformation and embedding safety leadership.
  • Data & Systems Proficiency - Advanced Microsoft Office skills and familiarity with HSE reporting systems.
  • Strategic Business Acumen - Ability to align safety initiatives with broader organisational goals and performance outcomes.
  • Strong communication, coaching and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to influence outcomes and support behaviour change.
