Full Job Description
We are excited to welcome a Staff Developer to join the Identity Platform team at 1Password. In this critical role, you will help shape the architecture, evolution, and reliability of the core identity systems that power 1Password. This platform underpins authentication, authorization, session management, device trust, policy enforcement, and integrations with external identity providers. It is foundational to both our consumer and enterprise offerings and central to our Extended Access Management strategy. Your leadership will directly influence our technical direction, ensuring alignment with company strategy while advancing modern identity capabilities and engineering excellence. This role is focused on building and executing a roadmap that elevates quality, scalability, and security across the identity domain. This is not just a technical role. It requires collaboration, creativity, and a strong sense of ownership. You will partner closely with teams across the company to deliver identity systems that are secure, resilient, and built for the way people and AI agents work today. How we're using AI today Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers. This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US. What we're looking for: - 8+ years of experience building resilient and reliable software systems - You have deep Go programming expertise - Strong understanding of authentication, authorization and identity concepts (OAuth, OIDC, scoped access, policy enforcement) with a background in security and performance - 5+ years of hands-on experience in identity and access management. - Proven ability to lead identity strategy and mentor teams across functions using outstanding communication skills, driving a security-focused culture across large organizations. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage technical and non technical audiences - Demonstrated experience defining and executing technical roadmaps - Deep expertise in distributed systems, system architecture, and product development within a cross functional environment - Proven ability to lead technical discussions and drive architectural decisions - A track record of raising quality standards through testing, observability, operational excellence, and secure development practices - Strong problem solving skills and the ability to navigate complex technical challenges - Curiosity and a desire to stay current with evolving identity standards and emerging technologies We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, even if you do not meet every listed qualification. Diverse experiences strengthen our teams, and skills can be developed in many ways. Bonus points for: - Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, SCIM, WebAuthn, FIDO2, or similar standards - Familiarity with enterprise identity, federation, or directory integrations - Experience building token services, policy engines, or high scale authorization systems - Understanding of zero trust architectures and device trust models - Demonstrated experience mitigating common vulnerabilities in authentication and authorization systems What you can expect: - Design and evolve identity services that power secure access across 1Password products - Architect scalable systems for authentication, authorization, federation, session management, and policy enforcement - Partner with technical leaders to build consensus and manage dependencies as part of delivering technical vision. - Write code with a focus on reliability, durability, and maintainability - Drive best practices in coding, testing, deployment, and operational readiness - Mentor engineers at various stages of their careers and foster technical growth - Influence long term platform strategy and align identity capabilities with broader company goals - Anticipate security risks and ensure compliance with modern standards and best practices - Improve the developer experience for teams building on identity services USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $192,000 USD and $278,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs. Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $167,000 CAD and $242,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs. At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set. This posting is for an existing vacancy.
