Full Job Description

About the Team

The BizApps Commerce Team owns the billing infrastructure that powers 8x8's commercial engine. We build and operate the systems that handle how customers are billed, how partners are onboarded, and how revenue flows through the business. Our work sits at the intersection of Product, Finance, and Platform engineering, and the systems we build are used every day by customers, partners, Salesforce ops, and finance teams worldwide.

We work across a modern, distributed stack and ship things that matter. We move fast, we own what we build end-to-end, and we care deeply about correctness because in billing, a bug isn't just a bug - it's a wrong invoice, an angry customer, or missed revenue.

The Role

We're looking for a Staff Software Developer who is excited about building reliable, scalable billing and commerce systems. You'll join a tight-knit team of engineers and work directly with your engineering manager, other staff developers, tech leads, and cross-functional partners across Salesforce, finance, and channel ops.

This is a full-stack backend-leaning role. You'll work on real problems like customer hierarchy modeling, subscription lifecycle management, consumption based billing, tax integrations, payment integrations, billing event processing and you'll have meaningful ownership from day one. Our platform makes extensive use of Spring Boot and Spring Cloud and the stack is primarily written using Java. The technology stack is entirely owned by 8x8 which means engineers have exposure to many facets of architecture.

Responsibilities

  • The position may be remote, you must be comfortable working autonomously and driving work forward in a distributed, fast-paced engineering organization

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, design, operations, infrastructure) to design and deliver reliable billing platform experiences

  • Architect and develop scalable backend services and APIs across the billing ecosystem including subscription lifecycle management, usage aggregation, and payment processing

  • Lead complex technical efforts end-to-end from requirements decomposition through design, implementation, and production rollout with minimal oversight

  • Provide technical guidance and architectural direction to engineers across the team; establish and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, and observability

  • Own the reliability, scalability, and performance of critical billing components; proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks, regressions, and integration failures

  • Drive technical design decisions for new platform capabilities such as usage-based billing models, and billing reconciliation pipelines

  • Establish deep end-to-end ownership of one or more core billing domains. You are the person the team turns to when something is unclear or broken

Key Qualifications:

  • 14+ years of experience designing and developing scalable, enterprise-grade backend systems ideally including billing, commerce, or financial platforms

  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical discipline where software engineering was a core requirement

  • Deep professional expertise in Java (primary); Python or other modern languages a plus

  • Proven track record architecting, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in production including design, deployment, and long-term ownership

  • Strong understanding of event-driven architecture with hands-on experience using Kafka or equivalent messaging brokers; experience building and maintaining event pipelines between heterogeneous systems is highly valued

  • Experience integrating with third-party platforms and enterprise systems such as ERP, CRM, billing engines, or payment processors

  • Solid grasp of API-driven design, REST and async patterns with a focus on testability, backward compatibility, and versioning

  • Security-first mindset: strong working knowledge of OAuth2, JWT, and securing inter-service communication in a microservices environment

  • Proficiency with relational databases including schema design, query optimization, and troubleshooting production performance issues

  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration: Docker and Kubernetes in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

  • Familiarity with observability practices 6 logging, metrics, distributed tracing 6 and using them to diagnose and resolve production issues

  • Actively embraces AI-assisted development tooling (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude) as a force multiplier; comfortable integrating these into day-to-day engineering workflow and helping teammates do the same

Anything Else?

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills

  • Experience working in a global environment, across multiple time zones and geographies

  • Exposure to Salesforce or a similar large CRM system

  • Familiarity with API-first development, OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.

  • Experience with integrations and ability to get up to speed with multiple third-party products and their APIs and Environments

  • Strong foundations in software engineering, encompassing the entire software delivery lifecycle.
