Staff Data Scientist - Power and Renewables

As the technical leader for market modeling, you will define and drive the analytical capabilities that power our Market Management System.

You'll partner with Product Management and Engineering to translate customer needs into sophisticated optimization models, forecasting capabilities, and production software.

Responsibilities include:
  • Lead the design and evolution of large-scale fundamental power market models.
  • Define the mathematical and analytical approaches behind new product capabilities.
  • Develop optimization, forecasting, and simulation methodologies for nodal electricity markets.
  • Collaborate closely with software engineers to ensure models are scalable, performant, and production-ready.
  • Work directly with customers and product managers to understand market problems and translate them into commercial solutions.
  • Guide technical direction across multiple product initiatives and influence long-term product strategy.
  • Mentor other data scientists and market modelers while raising the technical bar across the organization.
  • Stay current with evolving electricity markets, optimization techniques, and forecasting methodologies.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking someone with deep expertise in wholesale electricity markets who enjoys combining mathematical modeling, software development, and product innovation.

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Extensive experience developing or applying models for nodal wholesale electricity markets.
  • Strong understanding of market-clearing algorithms, security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC), economic dispatch (SCED), and transmission constraints.
  • Experience with mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and large-scale optimization.
  • Strong proficiency in Python with a commitment to writing clean, production-grade code and adhering to best coding practices.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes for container orchestration, API development/integration, and modern data engineering practices.
  • Ability to bridge the gap between electrical engineering principles and high-quality software development.
  • Ability to work across product, engineering, and commercial teams to translate complex market concepts into software products.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain sophisticated technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred
  • Master's or PhD focused on power systems, operations research, optimization, or related fields.
  • Experience developing or operating a Market Management System (MMS).
  • Experience with AC/DC power flow modeling.
  • Experience building commercial software products for ISO/RTO markets or power trading organizations.
  • Experience mentoring technical teams or leading complex product initiatives.
