Corning is seeking a
Staff Chemical Engineer to join our team in
Corning, NY. This role is primarily
onsite, with
relocation assistance provided, and requires
willingness to travel. Travel averages
up to 50% annually, with fluctuations depending on project stage and business needs, and is
primarily domestic with possible occasional international travel.
Chemistry plays a critical role in many of Corning's most advanced technologies. This role offers the opportunity to work across a
wide variety of products, processes, and
business areas where
chemical engineering helps shape how materials are developed, scaled, improved, and supported in manufacturing. Depending on the project, the work may touch areas such as
fiber optics, display and specialty glass, environmental technologies, Life Science Technologies, and other advanced materials applications. It is a strong fit for someone who enjoys
technical variety, hands-on problem solving, and using
chemical engineering fundamentals to help move ideas from
development into
real-world processes and products. The successful candidate will contribute to process and
product optimization initiatives, while performing rigorous process
safety and hazard analyses (e.g.,
PHA/HAZOP) to ensure adherence to Corning's safety stewardship standards and environmental health and safety compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Apply chemical engineering principles to support the design, development, scale-up, and optimization of chemical processes and manufacturing technologies
- Conduct hands-on experimentation in laboratory, pilot, and manufacturing settings to evaluate process concepts and support technology transfer
- Use structured problem-solving methods to investigate process issues, identify root causes, and support resolution of manufacturing or chemical process upsets
- Support process safety efforts, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance activities
- Analyze and interpret technical data using statistical and experimental methods to improve process understanding and performance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify technical challenges, evaluate solutions, and support project execution
- Document technical work through reports, presentations, and other written materials, including support for intellectual property development where applicable
- Track and communicate progress against technical and project objectives
- Support efforts to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and strengthen overall process performance
Minimum Qualifications and Skills- Master's degree or PhD in Chemical Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in chemical engineering or a related field, including work in areas such as process development, process scale-up, manufacturing support, process troubleshooting, chemical experimentation, process safety, or technology transfer
- Experience with process safety, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance in chemical or manufacturing environments
- Ability to work independently and execute technical objectives with limited oversight
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across cross-functional and global teams
- Willingness to travel domestically, with possible occasional international travel
Preferred Qualifications and Skills- Experience with chemical process simulation or modeling tools such as ChemCAD, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, COMSOL, MATLAB, or similar software
- Experience with Design of Experiments and statistical analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, Origin, SAS, or related platforms
- Experience scaling processes from lab to pilot to manufacturing, including troubleshooting and optimization
- Familiarity with process safety standards or frameworks such as OSHA, EPA, or NFPA
- Experience documenting technical work for intellectual property, patents, or formal technical reporting
- Experience leading technical projects, coordinating cross-functional work, or mentoring junior engineers
- Familiarity with sustainability, waste reduction, or green engineering practices
