About the role

In this role you will evaluate and price new and existing business while balancing profitability, growth, and market competitiveness. You will analyze financial and medical risk, manage a complex block of business, provide underwriting expertise, and collaborate closely with Sales, Brokers, and internal partners to deliver strong business outcomes.

What you will do
  • Underwrite new and renewal Stop Loss business by assessing financial, medical, and claims risk and determining appropriate pricing.
  • Analyze employer group experience, claim history, and member-level medical information to evaluate risk and develop underwriting recommendations.
  • Manage complex and high-visibility cases, including guideline exceptions and unique risk situations.
  • Partner with Sales, Brokers, TPAs, and internal stakeholders to negotiate pricing and support competitive market positioning.
  • Manage an assigned block of business while meeting goals related to profitability, growth, retention, service, and sales effectiveness.
  • Serve as a trusted subject matter expert and mentor, providing guidance, training, and support to underwriting team members.
  • Lead or contribute to underwriting initiatives, cross-functional projects, process improvements, and training efforts.
  • Provide market intelligence and recommendations to support product, pricing, and underwriting strategy.
  • Support RFP responses and other business development activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, brokers, sales partners, and internal teams.
  • Represent Symetra at industry and business events as needed.
  • Travel occasionally to support business and relationship-building activities.

Compensation

Salary Range: $106,400 - $177,300 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are
  • High school diploma required. College degree highly preferred.
  • 10+ years of Stop Loss Risk Based Underwriting required.
  • Strong knowledge of Stop Loss products, risk assessment, pricing methodologies, and underwriting principles.
  • Proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required.
  • Captive underwriting experience highly preferred.
  • David Young/ESL experience a plus.
  • Experience with reference-based pricing a plus.
  • Presentation and facilitation experience preferred.
  • Ability to travel periodically to meet the needs of the business.
