General Position Summary & Responsibilities

Radius Recycling has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Staff Accountant (SSA) to join our Operations Accounting team supporting our Steel Manufacturing Business. Cascade Steel is a leading manufacturer of finished steel products, including rebar, coiled rebar, and wire rod, serving primarily West Coast construction markets. Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor, the SSA will play an important role in supporting the financial operations of the Steel Manufacturing Business. This position is responsible for a broad range of accounting activities and applies accounting principles, analytical skills, and sound judgment to resolve complex accounting and business issues. The SSA works independently while fostering an environment of continual growth in process improvements, efficiency, and cost effectiveness. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence by delivering high quality work safely, effectively, and efficiently while minimizing accidents and errors and maximizing productivity and profitability.

Salary Range: $78,000 to $90,000 Annually

Essential Functions

  • Prepare month-end close journal entries and account reconciliations in accordance with IFRS.
  • Prepare fixed asset accounting adjustments, including additions, transfers, disposals, retirements, and depreciation.
  • Partner with operations to maintain accurate records for capital expenditures and capital projects.
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships with operations departments to drive collaboration, alignment, and optimal business outcomes.
  • Partner with the sales department to ensure proper revenue recognition.
  • Prepare quarter-end flux/account analysis.
  • Collaborate with accounting management to implement changes to processes as necessary.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual census surveys.
  • Provide support to internal and external auditors, assisting in audits and regulatory review.
  • Actively participate in building a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with employees across departments to support and complete special projects and assigned tasks.


Internal Control Responsibilities

Supports Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better match the business.

Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Interpersonal Contacts

Internal contacts are by phone, email and in person with all levels of personnel throughout Radius Recycling related locations. External contacts are by phone, email, in person, and in writing: i.e. banks, financial institutions, etc. Incumbent interfaces with Corporate Finance, other finance professionals internal and external to company.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not directly supervise any employees.

Job Conditions

This position operates in a hybrid work environment, currently three days per week at the company's corporate headquarters in Portland, Oregon and two days remotely, subject to change based on business needs. The role requires the ability to manage competing priorities, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and maintain focus in a busy office setting.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Ability to: lift and carry up to 10 pounds occasionally; sit for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; write by hand and keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; assemble papers, paper punch, staple, file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers. Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing and analyzing data figures, accounting, and computer use.
