The Opportunity

Sr. Software Development Engineer - VANCOUVER, CANADA
We are seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer specializing in AWS-based cloud
software with a strong background in data ontology and knowledge graphs. This position is
in our Vancouver, BC office within our Data Foundation Team. This role will be pivotal in
advancing our cloud software solutions, incorporating sophisticated data structures and
knowledge representation.

What You'll Do

  • In this influential role, you will:
    • Develop Advanced Cloud & Data Platforms
      • Utilize your AWS and cloud-native engineering to design scalable data pipelines, leverage
        modern table formats, and embed policy-as-code.
      • You will harness GenAI-powered developer tools to accelerate delivery while building robust, governed, self-service cloud platforms.
    • Lead in Technical Innovation
      • Guide the technical trajectory of a growing two-pizza "You Build It, You Run It" team.
      • Drive adoption of distributed data processing, Lakehouse architectures, and sidecar "Agent Boss" agents that continuously operate, optimize, and remediate workloads.
      • Ensure solutions adhere to cloud and data engineering best practices while unlocking velocity and scale.
    • Collaborate and Influence.
      • Work closely with product managers, data scientists, and platform engineers to balance velocity with governance.
      • You'll shape the future of our AWS-based platforms, ensuring they meet both business goals and user experience expectations, while sustaining a true 24x7 support model.

What You'll Bring

  • Required Qualifications:
    • 5+ years of professional software development experience including
      experience delivering complex, enterprise-grade software projects.
    • Strong proficiency in Java, Python, and SQL for enterprise application
      development, data processing, and database operations.
    • Strong expertise in AWS services and cloud architecture, with emphasis on
      building scalable, reliable, and secure software and data platforms.
    • Hands-on experience with large-scale data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache
      Spark, Flink, or AWS Glue) for distributed computing and analytics.
    • Proficiency with modern cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
      for data warehousing, analytics, and scalable data management.
    • Experience with cloud service integration and APIs.
    • Familiarity with DevSecOps principles and modern CI/CD practices for secure,
      automated software delivery.
    • Proficiency with Docker and containerization technologies for deployment,
      scaling, and environment management in cloud environments.
    • Strong working knowledge of data security, governance, and privacy best

    • Experience with building and maintaining Knowledge Graphs and managing
      Data Ontologies, enabling richer data discovery, interoperability, and governance
    • Solid understanding of W3C ontology standards (RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, SHACL),
      with practical experience in implementing ontologies with real data to drive
      measurable business value
    • Interest in or hands-on exposure to Generative AI architectures, including LLM
      integration patterns, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems, prompt
      engineering, and AI-driven data workflows that extend developer and platform
      productivity
    • Experience leveraging AI-powered coding assistants and developer
      productivity tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Amazon CodeWhisperer, CodiumAI, Claude
      Code) to accelerate prototyping, code refactoring, and proof-of-concept development
    • Familiarity with observability practices (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana,
      CloudWatch) and participation in on-call rotations, aligning with our "You Build It,
      You Run It" culture of ownership
    • Knowledge of multi-cloud environments (Azure or GCP) to support broader
      interoperability while keeping AWS as the primary execution environment
    • Experience with modern table formats (Apache Iceberg) and query engines
      (Trino, DuckDB)
    • Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, MWAA)
    • Experience with event streaming and CDC technologies (Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub
