Full Job Description
About the Role:

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and deliver features for acquisition, activation, upgrade/upsell, and retention that are core to Quizlet's growth. You'll work closely with other engineers, product managers, designers, and data scientists to turn ideas into scalable, high-quality solutions that serve millions of learners globally.

As a senior individual contributor, you'll take ownership of complex projects from concept through deployment, applying sound technical judgment and balancing trade-offs between user experience, performance, and maintainability. You'll play a key role in shaping architecture, driving best practices, and mentoring teammates through code reviews, design discussions, and technical guidance.

This role involves rapid experimentation: shipping and interpreting A/B tests is core to the job, with an expectation of fast iteration - quickly analyzing results, drawing conclusions, and adjusting course.

To help foster team collaboration, we require that employees be in the office a minimum of three days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and as needed by your manager or the company. We believe that this working environment facilitates increased work efficiency, team partnership, and supports growth as an employee and organization.

We're happy to share that this is an hybrid position in our San Francisco office. To support collaboration, we ask employees to be in the office at least two days a week: Wednesday, and Thursday.

In this role, you will:
  • Deliver end-to-end projects that directly contribute to Quizlet's product and business priorities - from planning and design through implementation, testing, and rollout
  • Design, implement, and analyze A/B tests (via GrowthBook) across acquisition, activation, or retention surfaces, with ownership of hypothesis framing through result interpretation
  • Partner with Data Science/Analytics to define success metrics, instrument events, and guard against false positives/negatives in experiment analysis
  • Build and maintain high-quality, scalable systems that reflect a strong understanding of your team's domain and its impact on learners and their lifecycle
  • Own a specific funnel or lifecycle surface (e.g., signup, onboarding, upgrade) end-to-end, including its instrumentation and health
  • Apply industry best practices and modern technologies to improve code quality, system reliability, and developer efficiency
  • Lead and contribute to technical discussions, offering thoughtful insights and helping to align the team on the best path forward
  • Break down complex projects into actionable, well-scoped tasks and execute them efficiently with minimal oversight
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues before they affect timelines, quality, or user experience
  • Mentor and support junior engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and sharing domain knowledge
  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve engineering practices, from build systems to deployment pipelines to observability tools
What you bring to the table:
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, ideally in fast-paced, product-focused environments
  • Proven ability to deliver complex projects end-to-end - from design and implementation through testing and deployment
  • Hands-on experience with experimentation/feature-flagging platforms (GrowthBook, Optimizely, LaunchDarkly, Statsig) - running tests, not just reading dashboards
  • Working knowledge of experiment design fundamentals - sample size/power, guardrail metrics, novelty effects, and avoiding false-positive conclusions
  • Solid foundation in backend, mobile development or full-stack, with a focus on building scalable, high-quality systems and user experiences
  • Comfortable working with event-tracking or analytics data pipelines (e.g., BigQuery, Pub/Sub) to instrument and validate experiments
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make thoughtful, data-informed technical decisions
  • Curiosity to explore and apply emerging technologies and frameworks
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Experience mentoring or guiding peers and contributing to a culture of learning
Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience with growth loops, referral/virality mechanics, or lifecycle messaging (Braze, Iterable, or similar CRM/push tooling)
  • Background in conversion rate optimization or funnel analytics specifically (as distinct from general product analytics)
  • SEO/ASO experience, or exposure to organic acquisition channels
  • Worked in environments with high data or performance requirements
  • Contributed to mobile-first product initiatives or multi-platform development, SDUI
  • Hands-on involvement in incident response or operational engineering practices
Compensation, Benefits & Perks:
  • Collaborate with your manager and team to create a healthy work-life balance
  • 20 vacation days that we expect you to take!
  • Competitive health, dental, and vision insurance (100% employee and 75% dependent PPO, Dental, VSP Choice)
  • Employer-sponsored 401k plan with company match
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning and other resources to support professional growth
  • Paid Family Leave, FSA, HSA, Commuter benefits, and Wellness benefits
  • 40 hours of annual paid time off to participate in volunteer programs of choice
