The Environmental Analysis Unit supports development of sustainable transportation infrastructure that minimizes impact on the human and natural environment.

The Public Involvement, Community Studies & Visualization Group is an interdisciplinary team of specialists located in the Environmental Analysis Unit. Numerous laws, policies, and procedures mandate that the public be given the opportunity to affect the planning/environmental studies, location, and design of transportation projects through hearings, meetings, and other forms of input early in the project development process. This information is used to analyze community impacts and provide complete and accurate information about these communities to designers.

We are looking for an Engineer to service as the Senior Public Involvement Officer.

In this role you will:
• assist and advise most segments of the Department of Transportation's organization in their accumulation and use of public input in the development, design and construction of projects.
• responsible for planning and conducting public outreach for legislative actions that require procedural changes by the Department.
• prepare and/or review of handouts, newsletters, display boards, webpages, and slide shows to be presented to the public.
• develop and maintain the ability to describe project maps and to explain project needs, history, design, and right of way details to the public affected by projects.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC20 $70,478.00 - $123,336.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Knowledge of public engagement techniques, methods, theories and Federal and State requirements for the environmental process.
  • Experience with public outreach/public involvement.
  • Knowledge of environmental planning techniques, methods, theories and Federal and State requirements for the environmental process.
  • Knowledge of the NEPA and SEPA process.
  • Experience communicating technical information verbally clearly and concisely to varied audiences in large groups.


Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
