Sr. NDE Technical Support Specialist - VT Level III

(Nuclear experienced VT Level III will be highly considered)

Job Summary
  • In addition to performing the functions of a Nuc NDE Technical Support Spec, the Sr NDE Technical Support Spc will provide oversight and mentor the Nuc NDE Technical Support Spec, and perform reviews of the NDE processes to ensure a Quality Product (e.g., Certifications, Training, Testing, Vendor Certification Reviews, etc.). They will explore and implement methods to improve efficiency using both internal self-assessments and external benchmarking. Will also help to organize workload to ensure Time Critical evolutions are performed in a manner that supports the Fleet.
  • Provides problem resolution and oversight to Nuc NDE Technical Support Specs and NDE training and to NDE technicians performing NDE inspection activities. Identifies and enters problems or issues into the corrective action process. May be assigned corrective and causal actions from within the CAP process.
  • Requires interfacing with the following: NOS, NRC, QC/ NDE Inspectors, ANII, Nuc NDE Technical Support Specs, Lead Nuc NDE Specs, various auditors, engineers, and Code Committees. Attend meetings representing NDE and reviewing committed work and non-committed schedules.
  • Provide assistance and guidance in maintaining NDE procedures to ensure compliance to applicable Code and Regulatory requirements. Performs an NDE Level III review of completed nuclear inspection records within NDE disciplines in which certified.
  • The individual will maintain Level III certifications and spend a minimum of 60 percent of their time performing oversight of field inspections and NDE Support personnel.


Job Responsibilities
  • Establishing and approving NDE techniques and procedures, mentoring and assisting NDE Technical Support Specialists, interpreting codes, standards, and specifications
  • Oversight of NDE Technical Support Specialists in the duties of their job(s), including but not limited to: IDDEAL CERTWORKS; preparing, maintaining, and reviewing NDE Certifications; developing, approving and delivering NDE Training; Testing and Certification of NDE Examiners, including exam writing; Dispositioning QA Records generated in the performance of their duties.
  • The Sr NDE Tech Support Spc shall be capable of establishing and approving NDE techniques and procedures, interpreting codes, standards, and specifications; and designating the particular test methods, techniques, and procedures to be used.
  • Develop and maintain NDE Implementation Level documents in accordance with the Nuclear Policy Manual, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and the Code of Federal Regulations
  • The Sr NDE Tech Support Spc shall be responsible for oversight of NDE operations, including NDE Technical Support Specs for which qualified and assigned to, and shall be capable of interpreting and evaluating results in terms of existing codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Oversight of NDE training and certification of Duke Nuclear QA/QC/NDE Technicians
  • Provides Level III technical support including training, certifications, and oversight of Duke Nuclear QA/QC/NDE Technicians.
  • Provides technical support to NDE Technicians, as needed.
  • The Sr NDE Tech Support Spc shall have proficient practical background experience as an NDE Level III in the Certification, Testing, and providing Accredited NDE Training, as well as IDDEAL CERTWORKS, to provide guidance and oversight of NDE Technical Support Specialists when required.
  • The Sr NDE Tech Support Spc shall have proficient practical background in applicable materials, fabrication, and product technology to establish techniques and to assist the design engineer in establishing acceptance criteria where none are otherwise available.
  • Conduct in field and Vendor off-site observations utilizing knowledge of certification proficiency.
  • The Sr NDE Tech Support Spc shall have very good familiarity with other appropriate NDE methods and be responsible for training and examination of Nuclear QA/QC/NDE Technician personnel for certification.
  • The Sr NDE Tech Support Spc will be assigned to providing oversight and owners approval of all assigned NDE Vendor and Vendor Level III's.
  • This position will require: routine on-system travel to Duke nuclear sites and occasional off-system travel to industry meetings, seminars, and manufacturer oversight visits


Basic Qualifications
  • Associates Degree
  • 6 years Minimum Required Related Work Experience
  • In Lieu of Degree, High School / GED and 8 years Minimum Required Related Work Experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Nuclear experienced VT Level III will be highly considered
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10 years Minimum Required Related Work Experience
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the QA program and other related documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and/or with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ASTM, ANSI, ASNT and ASME codes.
  • Experience reading and interpreting procedures, drawings, specifications, and codes.
  • Experience developing, qualifying, and approving NDE procedures and techniques.
  • Experience training, examining, and certifying NDE personnel.
  • Experience interpreting examination results.


Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with IDDEAL CERTWORKS
  • Demonstrated advance techniques of Microsoft Office Suite (spreadsheets, database applications, etc.)
  • Experience advising NDE methods, techniques, and new technology to meet business needs.
  • Minimum of Five (5) years' Level III experience, including Training, Testing, and Certifying, in two or more of the following methods for at least 2 (Initial and 1 recertification) complete testing cycles in accordance with ASNT CP-189:
    • Magnetic Particle (MT)
    • Liquid Penetrant (PT)
    • Visual/ ISI (VT)
    • Radiography (RT)
    • Ultrasonics (UT)
