Description & RequirementsThe Opportunity:The Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering is responsible for all aspects of capital execution in the corrugated packaging business.
This individual works through his/her team to manage all phases of capital projects. Ultimately responsible for the planning, organization, safe execution, and reconciliation/acceptance of projects within scope and budget. This manager will help to define project requirements, expected outcomes, benefits, project assignments, and works through their team to ensure that project objectives are met in a timely fashion.
This associate will follow a defined engineering process and be involved with developing project scope(s). Efficient execution of projects that support operational throughput improvement, facility/process sustaining projects, and health and safety goals is assumed.
This individual has a strong work ethic, self-driven, confident, and highly organized, and highly skilled in communication. Comfortable presenting ideas and actively communicating with anyone in Company or OEM organizational position - from the contractor/plant maintenance to the Chief Executive Officer of Smurfit Westrock or owners of companies we deal with.

Ensuring that all projects receive adequate hazard analysis prior to project start and project safety is paramount for the project duration.
- Support goals for safety excellence, environmental responsibility, sustainability, and other concerns, as appropriate.
- Develop, implement, and execute the planned capital budget. Work with Finance and Local Plant Management to develop and finalize capital submissions that support local and division strategies.
- Verify and accurately forecast capital investment monthly, quarterly, and annually for individual projects and for division funding.
- Lead your Project Engineering team to plan, design, document, properly budget and implement our capital strategy.
- Influence, recommend, and lead direct reports and others to ensure project success. This is a significant requirement of the job. Diplomacy, approachability, and the ability to foster trust are a must.
- Assess situations based on facts and quickly react to provide direction to individuals critical to the project or issue.
- Define problems, collect facts and data, and draw valid conclusions using input from stakeholders, as required to establish and provide direction.
- Interpret technical information in various forms, and deal with several abstract and/or concrete variables simultaneously.
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and summarize information and written materials. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and documents.
- Ensure that coordination and leadership is provided through your team, working with outside contractors on project scopes that vary. Maintain projects on budget and on schedule with transparent investment forecasting detail.
- Work with your team to generate drawings, specifications, detailed project timelines, and instructions necessary to convey project requirements to others.
- Assist in developing new products and value for our customers.
- Provide technical direction and assistance for facilities at any time in the event of emergencies or other events to reduce downtime.
- Effectively assist and serve as a resource for key improvement areas at each facility that relate to safety, maintenance, quality, cost, housekeeping, and manufacturing.
- Engage and develop your team to continuously improve and grow in capability and efficiently in execution. Prepare them for promotion.
What You Need to Succeed:- Engineering discipline bachelor's degree preferred, but not necessarily required. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 10+ years project management experience with capital projects. Corrugated industry experience preferred.
- Management experience in a similar strategy is highly desired.
- The ability to travel up to 80% at a moment's notice. Domestic and international travel, as required.
- Flexibility and passion to be on a team that does 'whatever it takes' to delight our customers.
- Proficient in:
- Employee engagement and development of teams
- The latest Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Project
- AutoCAD
- JD Edwards preferred
- Excellent time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills - ability to effectively communicate and create a shared understanding at multiple levels of the organization.
