JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Overview

At Abbott Cancer Diagnostics, we're cancer fighters. That's not a tagline, it's the reason we come to work every day. Our mission is to change lives through advances in cancer detection and treatment guidance, and ultimately to help eradicate the disease and the suffering it causes. Everything we build, including the software you'd be leading, exists to move that mission forward.

We're looking for a Senior Manager of Software Engineering to lead the team behind PatientHub and Consumer Initiated Orders, two of the products patients rely on most when they interact with us directly. These are internet-facing, high-traffic, content-rich portals, and we're looking for a leader who's as invested in growing this team as they are in growing the product.

This is a people-leadership role first and foremost. You'll report directly to the Senior Director of Software Engineering, and you'll have real room to shape how this team works, grows, and takes on hard problems together.

Staying technical matters here too. While this is a leadership role, we want someone with strong architectural instincts who stays close enough to the code to jump into design discussions and code reviews with the team, not just to observe, but to genuinely contribute.

We'd love to hear from you if you're a proven engineering leader who has led teams of 30 or more and operated as a manager of managers, and who genuinely enjoys working shoulder-to-shoulder with Product, QE, and UX as a normal part of the week rather than an exception. We're looking for someone who cares deeply about the growth of the people on their team, who leads with data and solid engineering fundamentals, and who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves when it matters.

Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:
  • Raise capabilities in the engineering team; including, but not limited to, developing coding, testing, and deployment protocols and best practices.
  • Maintain strong relationships and transparency with key stakeholders (Lab, Sales, Support, Customers, and Affiliates).
  • Partner with business and technology teams to prioritize roadmaps, requirements, balance business need with capacity, and technology constraints.
  • Influence senior engineering and business leaders to drive increased capability though engineering processes and technologies.
  • Work with business stakeholders and engineering teams to design innovative solutions to complex challenges faced by the Company.
  • Supervise staff; including, but not limited to, organize and prioritize work, write/conduct performance reviews, train/develop, and manage work performance.
  • Communicate goals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.
  • Motivate and inspire employees to do their best work through coaching.
  • Maintain morale and support employee engagement initiatives.
  • Ability to apply good process management, negotiating, influencing, and problem resolution skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent project communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to execute project delivery to client satisfaction on time, on budget with quality.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to articulate complex technical ideas in easy-to-understand business terms.
  • Ability to accomplish results through others, particularly by establishing relationships, effective controls, and leading in a managed service environment.
  • Ability to drive continuous improvements in organizational performance and efficiency, and career development for employees.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
  • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Degree/General Education Diploma and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
  • 10+ years of experience in Information Technology with increasing responsibility and advancing technical skills.
  • 5+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams.
  • Strong proficiency of object-oriented, service-oriented architecture, micro-service architecture, and programming principals.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in digital experiences, e-commerce, or content-platform environments, including leading customer-facing, internet-facing, high-traffic, content-heavy portal teams at enterprise scale
  • Experience leading or contributing to team design and domain ownership efforts, informed by Team Topologies principles, including service decomposition and establishing clear boundaries in complex enterprise environments
  • Experience defining and championing non-functional requirements (NFRs) such as performance, scalability, availability, observability, and security as first-class engineering concerns across multiple teams
  • Expertise with integration architecture patterns including HL7, FHIR, middleware technologies, and event-driven platforms such as Kafka
  • Familiarity with UX design systems and the engineering practices that support consistent, scalable user experiences in a product-led organization
  • Healthcare, life sciences, or other regulated industry experience, including internationally regulated environments
