Full Job Description
Flexible Work Arrangement: Hybrid

The (Sr./Lead) Engineer position provides support for real-time Energy Management System, with a focus on Network Applications – including State Estimation, Contingency Analysis, Transfer and Voltage Stability Analysis – with coordination towards SCADA, ratings and related internal tools. The Engineer's work will span from real-time emergency support all the way to long-term design and policy. Working with related teams that focus on architecture or modeling, the Engineer will perform the O&M, integration work, testing, operational event support, and training as necessary to run and advance the EMS to world-class performance. The engineer may be called upon as an SME in emerging policy issues that have impact on grid operations or EMS design.

May be required to be on 24x7 emergency on-call, weekly within a large 5 person plus rotation.
In-office time at PJM's Valley Forge campus is two days per week required, three days preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Take any action necessary to ensure the accurate, complete and reliable solution and analysis of the bulk electric system.
  • Use and evolve the system of metrics and controls for the quality assurance and long-term management of EMS O&M.
  • Partner with a wide variety of customers - TOs, GOs, PJM Dispatch - to ensure the critical needs are being met in a timely and professional manner.
  • Engage in Network Applications and EMS "tuning", both as an individual effort and as coordinated in a broader and diverse team, to strive for continuous excellence.
  • Coordinate with other overlapping EMS sub-teams and SMEs, such as AGC, SCADA, TERM, PI displays, one-lines, modeling team, etc. to ensure that the subdivision is building towards a cohesive vision.
  • At times - attend PJM committees or subcommittees or similar industry forums to act as a SME or PJM representative.
  • Support critical operational events such as hot/cold weather or other emergencies with services as need be.
  • Attend to industry news and emergency regulations and best practices, keeping PJM operations aligned with best practices.
  • Support security and compliance dictated activities such as audits and human performance evaluation programs.

Characteristics and Qualifications:
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • At least 5 years of experience working in real-time Energy Management System
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support
  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
  • Experience with power flow applications such as PSS/E, PSS-MUST, TARA, PAAC, EMS or equivalent

Preferred

  • MS degree in Engineering
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
  • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
