Position Overview:

The Senior Field Technician serves as the highest-level technical field resource, responsible for leading crews, managing complex testing and maintenance projects, and acting as a primary interface with customers and engineering teams. This role combines advanced technical expertise, leadership, and project coordination to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of substation work across a wide range of electrical equipment and systems.

Responsibilities

Safety & Leadership
  • Adhere to and enforce all company safety policies and procedures, ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
  • Lead daily job site safety briefings, proactively identifying, eliminating, and mitigating hazards.
  • Champion a strong safety culture, holding team members accountable and promoting continuous improvement through incident reviews and lessons learned.
  • Utilize Human Performance Error Reduction (HPE) tools and principles to minimize risk and enhance operational reliability.

Technical Execution & Expertise
  • Lead crews in the testing, inspection, maintenance, and commissioning of high, medium, and low voltage electrical equipment.
  • Install, test, and maintain electrical apparatus including circuit breakers (SF6, vacuum, LV), transformers (GSU and pad-mounted), instrument transformers, grounding systems, battery systems, and switchgear.
  • Perform and lead complex troubleshooting of electrical and control systems, determining root cause and implementing corrective actions.
  • Analyze test results using a strong understanding of electrical theory to validate system performance and identify deficiencies.
  • Consult schematics, wiring diagrams, manuals, and engineering resources to optimize equipment functionality and resolve issues.
  • Direct repair, replacement, and maintenance activities to ensure reliable restoration of equipment and systems.

Planning, Reporting & Project Oversight
  • Develop testing plans, procedures, and work scopes for electrical apparatus and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare, review, and approve detailed reports documenting testing, maintenance, repairs, and system performance.
  • Create and manage project documentation including test reports, discrepancy lists, and closure packages.
  • Lead execution of large-scale and complex projects, coordinating field activities to meet schedule, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Support project planning, resource coordination, and work sequencing to optimize field efficiency.

Team Development & Coordination
  • Train, mentor, and qualify Field Technician I, II, and III personnel, ensuring development of technical skills and safe work practices.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to field crews, reinforcing standards and best practices.
  • Coordinate daily activities with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.

Customer & Business Interface
  • Serve as a primary field point of contact for customers, providing updates, addressing concerns, and ensuring expectations are met.
  • Maintain professional relationships with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Represent the company in the field by delivering high-quality work and technical expertise.


Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen due to this being a safety sensitive position.
  • Complete a satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Able to work overtime and travel out of town for periods of time.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and currently have and be able to maintain a good driving record.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors or Associates Degree in Electrical/Electronic technology, or Military experience preferred
  • 10+ Years Relevant Industry Experience
  • NETA III Certified, NETA IV Certified a plus

Physical Requirements:
  • Able to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, able to lift 70 lbs.
