Scope of Position:

This Fiber Optic Process Engineer role will focus on early-stage process development of high-performance and high-density optical assemblies. Demonstration of technologies and fast paced new product introductions are key to business growth. The increasing demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) market are driving advanced optical assemblies to enable faster data processing and connectivity. The successful candidate will contribute to innovations that address the unique needs of AI applications thus helping Corning expand its presence in this rapidly evolving industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Early-stage process development of fiber optic arrays and connector assemblies
  • Design of precision tooling with hands-on assembly, alignment, and verification testing
  • Review of materials supporting product improvements, cost reductions, and reliability
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability principles to ensure high yields and low costs
  • Participate in team problem solving using structured methods / statistical tools
  • Analyze data for root cause investigations and recommend corrective actions
  • Collaborate with both internal and external resources to leverage expertise
  • Coordinate third party suppliers to drive completion of project milestones
  • Documentation of experimental plans and associated test procedures
  • Record process details to enable an efficient transfer to Manufacturing
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Domestic travel up to 10% based on project assignments


Required Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience with precision mechanical assemblies


Required Skills:

  • Hands-on lab proficiency with precision benchtop setups and testing
  • Familiar with materials including glass, metal, plastic, rubber, and epoxy
  • Experience with Design of Experiments to improve throughput and yield
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills leading to corrective actions
  • Familiar with process improvement methods such as DMAIC and Lean
  • Knowledge of assembly process for fiber optic connector terminations
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse global cross functional teams
  • Excellent communication skills reaching all levels of the organization
  • Use of AI tools to enhance productivity and improve decision-making
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality standards


Desired Skills:

  • Direct experience with fiber optic manufacturing and related technologies
  • Success with new product introductions into high volume manufacturing
  • Competence with Dimensional Engineering and Computer Aided Design
  • Analytical modeling and simulation skills using Finite Element Analysis
  • Design of semi-automated equipment with precision tooling and imaging
  • Knowledge of CNC Machining, Additive Manufacturing, and 3D Printing
  • Familiarity with theory of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

The range for this position is $102,650.00 - $141,145.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
