Job Summary

The Sr Distribution Supervisor of Substation Operations is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of field supervisors and workforce personnel engaged in the operation, maintenance, installation, and restoration of transmission and distribution substation equipment. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient execution of maintenance programs, capital projects, and emergency response activities within an assigned division. The position prioritizes corrective and preventive maintenance, provides technical expertise on equipment and operational issues, manages workforce assignments and performance, and ensures compliance with company policies, safety standards, environmental requirements, and labor agreements. The Supervisor serves as a key leader in supporting system reliability, restoring equipment during emergencies, and delivering planned work safely, on schedule, and within operational requirements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee the activities of first-line supervisors and field personnel responsible for the operation, maintenance, installation, and restoration of transmission and distribution substation equipment.
  • Lead the execution of maintenance programs, corrective actions, and capital improvement projects to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electric system.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement integrated work plans by prioritizing scheduled and emergent work activities, resource requirements, and project timelines.
  • Assign and manage workforce resources to ensure maintenance, construction, and operational activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established schedules.
  • Monitor project and work activity progress, adjusting priorities and work plans as necessary to address changing system conditions, equipment availability, and operational requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to resolve equipment failures, maintenance issues, operational challenges, and construction-related concerns.
  • Coordinate with system operations and participate in clearance meetings to ensure work activities can be safely executed and system restoration efforts are effectively supported.
  • Support emergency response and restoration activities by providing leadership, technical guidance, and decision-making during equipment failures, outages, and other system emergencies.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, environmental regulations, operating procedures, and applicable labor agreements while promoting a strong culture of safety and accountability.
  • Supervise employee performance and development activities, including staffing, training, coaching, performance evaluations, workforce planning, contract administration, grievance resolution, and on-call support responsibilities.


Job Specific Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of five (5) years of electric utility experience in the operation and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • Candidates without a bachelor's degree will be considered if they possess a minimum of ten (10) years of electric utility experience in the operation and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • At least five (5) years of supervisory experience required; experience supervising a union workforce is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to achieve results and effectively manage challenging situations.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to coordinate, direct, and oversee field operations.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, as the position requires travel to company locations, off-site assignments, and events.
  • Compliance with the Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required.

Desired:
  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong working knowledge of the Local Union 1049 Collective Bargaining Agreement and demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize, and manage field operations.
  • Preference will also be given to candidates with project management experience, including expertise in budgeting, cost control, and project execution.

As an employee of PSEG Long Island, you should be aware that during storm/outage restoration efforts, you may be required to perform functions different from normal operations and work extended hours beyond your regular work schedule. You may also be required to work on premise or in an alternate location as directed by the company.
