Overview The Sr. Counsel, IP and Advertising position is a full-time position primarily responsible for legal counsel, strategy and direction on IP and advertising matters at the forefront of the company’s digital and brand innovation efforts. Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, counseling on issues impacting original brand content production, digital platforms, and advertising initiatives, enabling creative brand storytelling across in-restaurant and digital channels while balancing legal and brand risk, and collaborating with business partners to bring brand and marketing initiatives to life safely and effectively. The role presents a unique opportunity to blend high-level IP and advertising legal expertise with business strategy, ensuring the Chick-fil-A brand resonates with guests while navigating a complex and evolving legal landscape.
Responsibilities
- Independently lead the legal clearance and assessment of integrated marketing assets andcampaigns for Chick-fil-A, Inc. and its affiliate entities, and provide trainings and educationalmaterials for business teams on relevant legal topics as needed.
- Navigate complex legal issues related to the development and maintenance of digitalplatforms, including but not limited to Terms and Conditions updates, loyalty programs,advertising disclosures, and freedom-to-operate (FTO) concerns.
- Drive legal strategy for emerging technologies, serving as a subject matter expert on theimplications of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) within the IP and advertising space.
- Independently manage legal oversight for sweepstakes, contests, and promotions,including official rules, execution and risk mitigation, and registration and bonding.
- Provide strategic support and counsel for creative content production and rights management, including long-form content clearance, talent and music agreements, bookpublishing, rights documentation and processes, and guild considerations.
- Collaborate with contract and litigation teams on complex IP and advertising issues, asneeded.
- Provide strategic counsel and support for issues impacting the protection, use, and enforcement of Chick-fil-As IP assets, including trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and patents.
- Partner with cross-functional teams on innovative solutions to support the Chick-fil-Asystem, which may include, but would not necessarily be limited to, counseling on newproduct development, issues related to advertising to kids and families, experientialmarketing, and consumer protection.
- Oversee a large network of outside legal counsel and associated costs, budgets, and timelines.
- Participate in various administrative matters, such as planning, budgeting and strategy for the Legal Department andIP & Advertising Legal Team and attending outside legal or industry events relevant to the role.
Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)
- Legal experience with a significant focus on IP or advertising law.
- Active member in good standingof a State Bar.
- Strong communication, writing,and editing skills.
- Proven ability to independentlymanage high-volume workloads and navigate complex legallandscapes with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
- Competence in the use ofstandard MS office applications.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)
- Professional experience and expertise spanning both IP and advertising law at a large law firm and/or relevant boutique experience, and/or focused inhouse corporate experience.
- Experience advising on content production, digital platforms, emerging technologies, and/or a nationally recognized consumer brand.
- Demonstrated passion for innovation, learning, and change management.
- Desire to work cross-functionally within a team and a broader inhouse legal department.
- Ability and willingness to serve both leadership and supporting roles in cross-functional projects and/or teams.
- Experience leveraging A.I. systems to create scalable efficiencies and processes.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple, simultaneous and shifting demands, priorities and tight deadlines.
