Responsibilities

  • Analyze coverage and communicate coverage positions
  • Conduct and coordinate investigations into loss facts and damages

  • Coordinate loss information for stakeholders and present in meetings

  • Negotiate and settle claims, particularly those in litigation
  • Participate in special projects and assist team members as needed

  • Present case updates to senior leadership during roundtables
  • Ensure timely service throughout the claims lifecycle
  • Set reserves or make recommendations for reserve changes

Full Job Description
This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate to high complexity and moderate to high exposure claims which can be subject to disputes that must be resolved in mediation or litigation. The primary purpose of this job is to handle claims arising from our Program accounts. This includes evaluation of coverage, assessment of legal liability (where relevant) and exposure analysis, to bring the matters to a timely and accurate resolution; ensuring mitigation of indemnity and expense exposure while communicating developments and outcomes as necessary to all internal and external stakeholders. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work with minimal oversight and will provide training and be a technical referral point for other team members. Responsibilities 33Analyzes coverage and communicates coverage positions 33Conducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and extent of damages 33Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims 33Contributes to maintenance of claims guidelines and best practice procedures 33Coordinates loss information for business stakeholders and presents information during meetings with underwriters and/or insureds when applicable 33Delivers technical training to colleagues and external contacts as appropriate 33Directs and monitors assignments to experts and outside counsel, ensures effective vendor and litigation management on moderate to high complexity claims including demonstrable savings 33Evaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposure 33Negotiates and settles claims typically in litigation either directly or indirectly 33Participates in special projects or assists other team members as requested 33Prepare coverage position letters on matters typically in litigation without assistance of outside coverage counsel. 33Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing information 33Present at roundtables to senior claims leaders and underwriters on cases going to trial 33Provides timely service throughout the life cycle of the claim by meeting all service level agreements, initiating timely contact to all appropriate parties, and responding to incoming inquiries according to company policy and procedures. 33Sets reserves within authority or makes claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager 33Travel to mediations, trials, and conferences as required 33Utilizes acceptable investigation claims handling and settlement techniques that achieve cost effective and timely closure results by obtaining, reviewing and analyzing documentation, policy provisions and other records. Education 33Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience Certification 33Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license. 33Successful achievement of industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU) or 33Participation in industry training opportunities (CLM Claim College, Munich Re Training, FDCC, etc..) Qualifications 33Minimum of 5 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience 33Successful completion of 3 years as a Claims Examiner 33Excellent written and oral communication skills 33Strong analytical and problem solving skills 33Strong organization and time management skills 33Ability to deliver outstanding customer service 33Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word) 33Ability to work in a team environment 33Strong desire for continuous improvement 33Markel offers hybrid (3 days in the office and 2 days remote ) and fully remote option for this opening. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
