Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Compensation Partner supporting our US and Bermuda Insurance business. This role will be a member of the HR team and will help ensure the pay programs and structures that support the US and Bermuda business are competitive, equitable, and aligned with our business strategy to help attract and retain top talent globally. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of compensation frameworks, regulatory compliance and ideally the underwriting job family.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Serve as the strategic compensation advisor to business leaders, HR Business Partners, and managers by providing guidance on compensation philosophy, market competitiveness, pay decisions, and compensation-related programs.
  • Conduct market pricing and compensation benchmarking using multiple survey sources and external market data to develop competitive pay recommendations and support talent decisions.
  • Prepare compensation recommendations and analyses for talent actions, including promotions, organizational changes, offer evaluations, and complex compensation decisions.
  • Partner with HR Business Partners and business leaders on job evaluation and leveling, ensuring roles are appropriately aligned within the organization's career framework and compensation structures.
  • Conduct complex compensation analyses and build compelling presentations that synthesize data, market intelligence, and business context into meaningful insights and recommendations. Present findings to HR and business leaders to support compensation strategy, talent decisions, workforce planning, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Develop compensation analytics, dashboards, and reporting tools that provide insights into pay competitiveness, workforce trends, and compensation program effectiveness.
  • Champion the adoption of new technologies and analytical tools to modernize compensation operations and consulting, improve stakeholder experiences, increase productivity, and deliver data-driven insights at scale.
  • Collaborate across HR, Finance, Talent Acquisition, and business leadership teams to ensure compensation programs support business objectives, talent strategies, regulatory compliance, and internal equity.
  • Partner with HRBPs and business leaders to harmonize compensation programs, plans, and processes on enterprise-wide initiatives. 
  • Guide client groups through mid-year and year-end compensation cycles. 
  • Lead strategic compensation projects across different client groups. 
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

What you will bring to the role

  • At least 8-10 years of progressive experience in Compensation; experience in Underwriting compensation desirable
  • At least 5 years experience in business partnering or consulting
  • Be able to demonstrate prior experience and understanding of complex total reward compensation plans and awards
  • Demonstrate strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to message complex and/or HR process in in a persuasive and pragmatic way
  • Advanced Excel experience, with an ability to model and interpret data as well as presenting information at an executive level
  • Able to work independently with the ability to manage a varied range of activities and projects with a positive attitude
  • Experience with Workday desirable
  • Experience with benchmarking tools such as Market Pay desirable
  • Experience of M&A activity desirable
  • Role model the Markel Style with a high level of integrity and discretion

Pay information:

The salary range for this position is $108,800.00 - $226,800.00. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
