About the Position

The purpose of this position is to provide planning and management of the architectural design, implementation, maintenance, and support Enterprise-wide databases. The SQL Server Administrator will be responsible for building and maintaining SQL servers, access, and security as well as participate as a member of the Infrastructure Team by providing Windows server and infrastructure support as needed. This position will also participate in an on-call rotation and assist supporting other teams with their SQL and server requests.

The SQL Server Administrator is responsible for providing the highest level of SQL server and database administrator services and expertise to support, administer and maintain the installation, configuration, performance, backup, and operation of SQL systems. This position is distinguished from the Systems Administrator in that it is responsible for resolving the most complex database issues. In addition, positions may provide leadership to other team members or other IT staff.

Operating within a complex hybrid environment, this role performs advanced configuration of SQL server and databases, implements security policy base on RBAC principles, oversees SQL backups and conducts test restores on an approve schedule, and leads SQL related incident response during production-impacting events. The position serves as a Tier III SQL escalation resource and collaborates with cybersecurity, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure solutions align with organizational standards and long-term technology strategy.

Success in this role requires advanced technical expertise, strong architectural judgment, and the ability to influence technical direction while mentoring administrators and promoting continuous improvement. Further, the individual should be highly collaborative and possess a customer service mindset supporting needs within the overall department.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis.

  • Seven years of professional Microsoft SQL Server database and Windows Server experience within a large enterprise or government environment including virtualization
  • Experience with high availability systems (Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication)

Job Contributions

Working Conditions
  • This position follows a hybrid work model, combining remote work with on-site visits to locations such as downtown Phoenix and County data centers
  • Duties may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for distances up to 500 feet
  • Travel to various job-related sites may be required during the workday and must comply with County policies regarding the use of County or personal vehicles for official business
