Description of Work
As a position assigned to the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Services, this job functions as a liaison Speech-Language Pathologist assigned to area(s) serving people with mild/moderate/severe/profound intellectual disabilities. The position is responsible for identifying, determining, coordinating and directing all speech and language programming in the assigned units and integrating communication with other aspects of the social, recreation, vocational, educational, and daily living program. Position completes comprehensive communication assessments, provides direct and indirect treatment, provides training to other staff and disciplines as needed, and attends interdisciplinary meetings as scheduled. The SLP, as part of Murdoch's Swallow Team, coordinates and informally assesses swallow skills and provides services and guidelines when people are admitted and as needed.
Scheduled work hours/shift: 8am-4:30pm, with some variations.
This is a full time position and eligible for the full state benefits package including Health Insurance, paid sick/vacation/holidays, retirement, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of speech and language pathology, standardized (and functional non-standardized) tests and evaluation methods, principles, and procedures, plus understanding of a variety of communication disorders and causes in children/adults.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams is needed.
  • Experience with the IEP process is prefered as we are a large center and there may be a need in any number of buildings.
  • Knowledge of augmentative communication, assistive technology, basic sign language, and swallowing disorders is preferred.
  • Candidate must have/be eligible for their CCC or CFY from ASHA and have/be eligible for the NC SLP license.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Ability in assessing and treating communication difficulties associated with a variety of developmental disorders is a must.
  • Ability to learn and implement North Carolina Intervention (NCI) skills.
  • Ability to learn and implement formal behavioral interventions.
