OverviewJoin Microsoft Advertising's Billing Platform team and help power one of the company's most business-critical systems. Our platform manages the end-to-end financial lifecycle for advertisers, including revenue recognition, invoicing, payments, tax compliance, budget control, financial reporting, and large-scale billing operations across global markets.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for a distributed, mission-critical platform that processes billions of dollars in advertiser spend. You will drive architecture modernization, platform reliability, AI-powered operational excellence, and new monetization capabilities while partnering across Finance, CRM, Measurement, Payments, and Marketplace teams.
Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.
Responsibilities- Lead the architecture and evolution of Microsoft's Advertising Billing Platform.
- Design and build scalable services supporting billing, invoicing, payments, tax, revenue recognition, and financial reporting.
- Drive platform modernization, cloud migration, and architectural simplification.
- Establish engineering excellence standards for reliability, observability, security, and operational readiness.
- Partner with product, finance, and engineering teams to deliver new monetization models and global compliance requirements.
- Leverage AI and automation to improve diagnostics, incident response, developer productivity, and customer support experiences.
- Mentor senior engineers and influence technical strategy across the Platform organization.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Proven experience building large-scale distributed systems and cloud services.
- Solid system design and architectural leadership skills.
- Experience with financial systems, payments, billing, accounting, commerce, or enterprise platforms is highly desirable.
- Track record of driving cross-organizational initiatives and leading through influence.
- Passion for engineering excellence, operational rigor, and customer impact.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
