Full Job Description
The Problem

Flock's device fleet is scaling fast, and Fleet is the core engineering team keeping it all running. You'll lead a team building and maintaining the internal tools, web services, alarms, and status-tracking platforms that monitor the health of our live device network nationwide. No exaggeration: this work is mission-critical. If a device goes down, our customers feel it immediately, making this team our first line of defense.

This is a player-coach role (60% people management / 40% individual contribution). You'll split your time between mentoring engineers, driving technical strategy, and staying directly in the codebase so you're never too far removed from what your team ships. If you want to grow a high-performing engineering team while writing software that directly impacts public safety outcomes, this is the seat.

What You'll Own
  • Lead a team of software engineers, supporting their career growth, managing sprint execution, and driving high-performing team dynamics.
  • Drive technical strategy, roadmap planning, and microservices design across device monitoring, alerting, and internal health tools.
  • Write full-stack code using TypeScript, Node.js, and React to deliver real-time dashboards, web services, and robust APIs.
  • Build and manage containerized applications using Docker, Kubernetes (via Helm), and AWS managed services (S3, API Gateway, SQS).
  • Leverage modern AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, etc.) to streamline workflows and boost team delivery speed.

What This Role Is Not
  • This isn't a hands-off, purely administrative management job. You will actively review code, contribute to the stack, and solve complex architectural challenges alongside your team.
  • This is not an RF hardware or field service management position. You will build the software platform, metric engines, and real-time monitoring infrastructure that power physical device operations.
  • This isn't an isolated feature-building role. You will work cross-functionally across multiple engineering and operations teams to solve high-visibility, mission-critical scaling problems.

What You Bring
  • Proven track record leading, managing, or mentoring software engineers with a strong focus on team growth and constructive feedback.
  • Strong hands-on coding ability with TypeScript / Node.js for backend web services and modern frontend frameworks like React.
  • Solid SQL database experience and hands-on familiarity with cloud environments (AWS S3, API Gateway, SQS) and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm).
  • Strategic mindset with experience designing microservices, managing dependencies, and turning complex unknowns into actionable plans.
  • Practical comfort using modern AI-assisted engineering tools to optimize team velocity and personal development output.

Compensation

In this role, you'll receive a starting salary between $200,000 - $220,000 + Flock Stock Options. (Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, and market indicators). Your recruiter will discuss this in depth with you during our first chat.

Some problems get solved faster in the same room, so we prioritize candidates in Atlanta and Boston. Hub-based roles mean real in-person time with your coworkers. Remote roles exist, and when a posting is open to remote work, it says so.
