Position Overview

As a Software Engineer Sr - COBOL/Mainframe within PNC's Wholesale Payments organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA.

The MCA (Multi-Currency Account) team is responsible for supporting PNC Bank’s international cash management platform and system of record for foreign currency deposit accounts.

The Software Engineer Sr responsibilities combine application support, software development, and vendor partnership responsibilities, requiring an individual who can take ownership of a business-critical platform, drive enhancements, troubleshoot production issues, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the application.

This position may be eligible for remote work in select geographic locations, subject to approval by PNC. If approved, work must be conducted from a quiet, secure, and confidential home-based workspace. Occasional in-office participation may be required based on business needs.

Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary technical resource for the MCA platform, developing deep application knowledge to provide effective support and issue resolution.
  • Partner with external vendors, including Oracle Flexcube support teams, communicate production issues, coordinate upgrades, evaluate upcoming releases, and manage critical events impacting the platform.
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy software solutions that support international banking, payment processing, regulatory reporting, and cash management functions.
  • Provide application support and troubleshooting across Mainframe environments, identifying root causes and implementing long-term solutions for production incidents.
  • Develop and maintain software components using COBOL to support core banking and transaction processing functionality.
  • Support and optimize Oracle Database environments, including data analysis, troubleshooting, and resolving application-related database issues.
  • Utilize Linux Servers to support application hosting, system administration activities, deployments, and operational stability.
  • Monitor application performance using Dynatrace, proactively identifying system bottlenecks, performance concerns, and production risks.
  • Manage incidents, service requests, problem records, and change activities through ServiceNow, ensuring timely resolution and documentation.
  • Analyze business requirements and design technical solutions that address complex operational and regulatory needs.
  • Document technical designs, development activities, support procedures, and operational processes.
  • Perform software maintenance, debugging, enhancements, and environmental improvements to ensure ongoing platform reliability and performance.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality technology solutions.
  • Support periodic platform upgrades, vendor updates, and enhancement initiatives while minimizing operational risk.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience in software development, application support, systems analysis, or a related technology role.
  • Hands-on experience supporting applications in a Mainframe environment, including troubleshooting production issues and maintaining critical business systems.
  • Strong development experience using COBOL to build, enhance, and support enterprise applications.
  • Experience working with Oracle Database technologies for application support, data analysis, query development, and issue resolution.
  • Experience administering or supporting applications hosted on Linux Servers, including deployment, monitoring, and operational support activities.
  • Hands-on experience utilizing Dynatrace for application monitoring, performance analysis, and proactive issue identification.
  • Experience using ServiceNow for incident management, change management, problem management, and operational support processes.
  • Strong application support background with the ability to develop subject matter expertise and assume ownership of a complex business-critical platform.
  • Experience working within Agile delivery environments and collaborating across development, support, and business teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, identify root causes, and drive resolution through completion.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively partner with vendors, stakeholders, and technical teams.
  • Hands-on development experience using Java to support and enhance application components within an enterprise environment.
  • Experience utilizing Informatica for data integration, transformation, migration, and data movement processes.
  • Experience supporting Oracle Flexcube or other core banking platforms.
  • Banking, treasury management, international cash management, or financial services technology experience.
  • Payments domain experience, including support of transaction processing, settlement, or related banking operations.
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments requiring compliance, audit, reporting, or regulatory support functions.
  • Proven ability to become a technical subject matter expert for complex applications and platforms.

Pay Transparency

Base Salary: $86,250.00 – $172,500.00

Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data and on individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with the payment based upon company, business and/or individual performance.
