We are looking for a passionate Software Development Manager to lead a team responsible for the S3 Index's request routing systems. The S3 Index maintains the metadata for the objects stored in S3. We tackle some of the hardest computer science problems. We build systems that can handle wildly varying access patterns and unprecedented load by our customers. As the leader of this team, you will be tackling complex challenges in supporting new features, performance optimization, and system decoupling, ensuring that S3 continues to deliver exceptional reliability and performance at massive scale.

In this role, you will:

- Lead a team of talented software engineers, fostering their growth and development while delivering critical components of S3's architecture

- Drive the technical roadmap for S3 Index's request routing

- Invent new ways to ensure correctness and optimize performance data flows through the S3 object Request Plane

- Enable end-to-end data integrity and performance optimizations across S3 Request Plane, Index, and Storage systems

- Protect against coupling between systems in accessing S3 objects to meet organizational needs

- Ensure operational excellence through metrics, monitoring, and continuous improvement

You'll partner with senior leaders and peer teams across S3 including Index, Object APIs, and Storage to set direction, align priorities, and continuously improve our systems and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

The ideal candidate will be able to lead in resource-constrained and performance-sensitive areas, with relentlessly high standards. This role is technical: you'll be expected to contribute to architecture discussions while regularly taking part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises or technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues. A strong understanding of distributed systems and experience operating services at scale is a plus.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations - from foundational services such as Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS's services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you'll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
