Reports to: Software Engineering Manager

Vacancy: Existing vacancy

The Role:

JD Power is looking for a senior data engineer with excellent quantitative and analytical skills who can combine multiple data sources to solve complex challenges around vehicle valuations, market readiness, and customer purchase decisions. You'll work hands-on with quantitative data to create new capabilities and improve existing ones. Beyond day-to-day engineering, you'll be a strategic technical advisor, translating complex data problems into business solutions and mentoring the next generation of data engineers.

The Impact You Will Have in This Role:

We build data products that solve critical problems for the auto industry. Every data engineer works on production initiatives that directly impact new and existing products. In this role, you'll own end-to-end responsibility for business-critical projects, ensure technical excellence across the team, and drive organizational capability through knowledge transfer and mentorship.

What You'll Be Doing in This Role:

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Daily immersion in automotive industry data, with deep expertise in complex business rules and data management
  • Own full development lifecycle-architecture, development, testing, and bug resolution-for business-critical data initiatives
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define data requirements and translate business problems into technical solutions
  • Engineer robust, extensible data pipelines using modern cloud technologies (Snowflake, DATAPROC, AIRFLOW, Cloud Composer, Big Query)
  • Design, troubleshoot, and execute repeatable data processes; identify bottlenecks and optimize for efficiency and reliability
  • Bridge technical and business teams: analyze complex issues and communicate findings in terms business leadership understands
  • Enforce engineering best practices and proactively identify security vulnerabilities across the team
  • Mentor junior engineers on new technologies, processes, and industry domain knowledge
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives across Consulting, New Product Development, Data, and Engineering teams

Qualifications of this Role:

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Quantitative Marketing, Finance, Engineering, or similar field
  • 6+ years of full-time quantitative analytics and data engineering experience
  • Expert in SQL and Python; proficiency in modern cloud data platforms (GCP Bigquery, Snowflake)
  • Highly skilled in extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes with demonstrated efficiency and accuracy outcomes
  • Hands-on experience with orchestration tools (AIRFLOW, Cloud Composer) and distributed computing (DATAPROC)
  • Proven ability to integrate complex, multi-source data sets with multiple dimensions and layers of complexity
  • Track record of resolving data quality issues creatively and effectively; strong judgment to flag anomalies and inconsistencies
  • Ability to translate technical analysis into clear business insights; effective communicator in written and verbal formats
  • Subject matter expertise or demonstrated ability to quickly develop deep domain knowledge in industry-specific business rules and processes

AI-Assisted Development
  • Proficient with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) and able to judge when to accept, edit, or reject generated output
  • Skilled at providing effective context - codebase conventions, requirements, constraints - to produce production-quality results
  • Experience using AI to accelerate test authoring, documentation, and routine refactoring
  • Aware of AI tool limitations: hallucinated APIs, outdated patterns, security pitfalls in generated code, and the need for human verification before merge

Personal Attributes
  • Self-directed and detail-oriented, able to take ownership of work from requirements through release
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, comfortable working across technical and business stakeholders
  • Supports the growth of other team members through peer reviews, pairing, and mentorship
