About this opportunity:

The Senior Well Abandonment Geologist/Geoscience Technologist within the Asset Retirement (ARO) team provides technical guidance and stewardship for both routine and non-routine well abandonment programs, including yearly monitoring and repairs of surface casing vent flow (SCVF) and gas migration (GM) wells. In addition to providing technical leadership for well abandonment and remediation activities, the role will help advance data-driven decision making, digital innovation, and the application of emerging technologies to improve management of a large and complex well inventory while supporting the company's closure and liability reduction objectives.

What you'll do:

  • Identify, evaluate, and champion innovative approaches to well abandonment and remediation, including workflow automation, predictive analytics, and technology-enabled solutions that improve operational efficiency, decision-making, and cost performance.
  • Leverage data analytics, digital tools, and emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve well prioritization, risk assessment, remediation planning, and portfolio management across a large inventory of inactive wells.
  • Manage the well remediation portfolio by proposing annual wells for remediation using risk-based and area-based closure strategies, collaborating with execution teams to optimize scheduling and assignment of actions while ensuring compliance and stewardship of the approved budget.
  • Lead technical evaluations incorporating cased-hole well log analysis in collaboration with Abandonment Engineers to identify root causes of remediation failures and/or successes, refine remediation methodologies, communicate lessons learned, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain robust data management practices to support the stewardship of a large well inventory, ensuring data quality, consistency, accessibility, and effective integration of geological, engineering, operational, and regulatory information.
  • Support the development and implementation of automated reporting, dashboards, and data visualization tools to enhance tracking of remediation performance, compliance obligations, liability reduction, and program execution.
  • Support routine abandonment activities related to groundwater protection, including assessment of thermal potential and commingled abandonment opportunities to maximize cost savings while maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in industry associations, technical committees, technology forums, and digital innovation initiatives related to well abandonment and remediation to monitor emerging practices, evaluate new technologies, and share learnings across the organization.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, field operations, data management, digital, regulatory, and environmental groups to identify opportunities for process improvement, technology adoption, and continuous enhancement of abandonment programs.


Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Professional Geologist (P.Geo.) or Geoscience Technologist
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in oil and gas well abandonment or geology experience in upstream oil and gas
  • Working knowledge of Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources (Sask MER) directives and requirements related to well abandonment and remediation
  • Familiarity with risk-based well management, abandonment planning, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience utilizing advanced analytics, large datasets, digital solutions, AI-enabled tools, or automation technologies to support technical decision-making and portfolio management is considered an asset
