Responsibilities

Manage all related underwriting tasks required in assigned territory to promote written premium growth and favorable loss ratio results.

  • Select and write new and renewal commercial accounts to achieve production and profit goals.
  • Manage assigned agency relationships and make agency visitations as needed.
  • Coordinate loss control and claims services as needed.
  • Negotiate facultative reinsurance on accounts where needed.
  • Refer items exceeding your authority level to Director in a timely manner to provide an analysis on a referral form with your recommendations.
  • Maintain a workflow for your assigned territory which meets all the standards and expectations of the department and consistency to strive to improve workflow.
  • Train or assist in training of others as necessary. Help co-workers improve their skills by sharing your knowledge.
  • Demonstrate enhanced product knowledge and act as a resource for team and other departments.
  • Demonstrate commitment to self-development, course learning and educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrate consistent commitment to department’s underwriting guidelines and best practices via formal and informal reviews and department roundtables.
  • Handle larger and more complex risks and agencies.
  • Provide direction to underwriters and support staff as needed
  • Maintain a workflow for assigned territory that meets all department service standards and expectations and consistently strive to improve workflow.
  • Demonstrate ability to lead, mentor and coach individuals and teams

  • Assist with supervision of staff in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. This may include interviewing, hiring and training employees, assigning and directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, resolving problems and tracking time and attendance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, Risk Management, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7-10 years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience with demonstrated success managing both new and renewal business.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, underwriting principles, risk assessment, policy pricing, and profitability management.
  • Proven ability to evaluate, select, and write complex commercial risks while exercising sound underwriting judgment.
  • Experience managing agency relationships and developing business with independent agents and brokers.
  • Ability to analyze account exposures, identify coverage solutions, and make profitable underwriting decisions.
  • Experience coordinating with claims, loss control, audit, and other internal business partners to support account performance.
  • Knowledge of facultative reinsurance concepts and experience negotiating reinsurance placements preferred.
  • Ability to prepare underwriting referrals, formulate recommendations, and present risk analyses to management.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain workflow standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle larger, more complex accounts and agency relationships.
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to mentor, train, and develop underwriters and support staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to provide guidance, coaching, and direction to individuals and teams.
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred, including recruiting, interviewing, employee development, performance management, work assignment, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make recommendations and implement effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and industry education.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments while supporting underwriting guidelines, best practices, and organizational objectives.
  • Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, AU, or other advanced insurance coursework preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and underwriting systems.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for agency and customer visits as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
