Full Job Description
As a Senior Casualty Underwriter you will, under direction of an assigned unit manager and in accordance with established procedures and underwriting authority: underwrite and maintain/service profitable new and renewal business exercising self-supported judgment based on comprehensive knowledge of policy form terms and conditions and coverage intent; increase our market share, our visibility, and solidify our position as a leader in the marketplace by participating in marketing activities; be dedicated to maximizing the efficiency of the group, maintaining morale, and providing quality service to internal and external customers.

What you'll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?
  • Underwriting: Underwrite terms and conditions and establish pricing for new and renewal business by gathering, reviewing, and analyzing account information. Achieve consistent satisfactory internal/external audit results by adhering to underwriting guidelines, regulatory and rating guidelines. Effectively communicate with underwriting, actuarial, legal, underwriting service department (USD) and claims staff to ensure profitability of accounts. Maintain and service a book of business by analyzing endorsement requests, participating in large loss and customer account team meetings, audits and provide top quality customer service to brokers and cedants.
  • Business Development: Participate in the strategic planning and implementation of business development activities including but not limited to: identification of key brokers and markets; participation in activities/events with broker/client visits; completion and implementation of action plans from marketing activities; and accompany underwriters on broker/client visits as needed.
  • Collaboration: Work effectively in a team setting; contribute to the creation and sustaining of a high performance team by embracing and understanding team and unit goals, perform job functions at a meet expectations or above level, and contribute to and implement actions to improve performance and efficiency.

You will report to the Head of Canadian Reinsurance.

  • Some to moderate work experience in primary insurance and/or reinsurance
  • Understanding of standard casualty liability insurance coverage and underwriting
  • Understand policy/reinsurance rating and be proficient in the use of policy rating systems
  • Familiarity with policy and contract wording
  • Math Aptitude
  • Robust PC skills
  • General Competencies: Underwriter must be detail oriented and accurate, have demonstrated organizational skills and flexibility, have excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills, have the ability to apply creative, analytical and mathematical skills to problem-solving; have the ability to work self-directed, have excellent customer focus, responsiveness and multi-tasking abilities, be team-oriented and have a consistent commitment to excellence, have the ability to enter information accurately and have the ability to work in a fast paced environment.

The Canada base salary range for this position is CAD 119,250 - 169,250.

Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual's skills, experience and location. We strive for market alignment and internal equity with our colleagues' pay.
