SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Consulate General of Canada in New York is hiring a Senior Trade Officer who plans, develops, and implements initiatives to drive Foreign Direct Investment into Canada. This includes developing and implementing FDI promotion strategies, fostering relationships with target contacts and clients, and delivering outcomes in support of the overall international business development objectives of the consulate.

Under the direction of the Consul and Trade Commissioner, the position contributes to the successful delivery of the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) - www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca - which is a network of more than 1,000 trade professionals working in Canadian embassies, high commissions, and consulates located in 160 cities worldwide. It helps Canadian companies grow and operate internationally by connecting them with qualified contacts, business opportunities, and providing key information to help them succeed in markets around the world. The Trade Commissioner Service also works closely with Canada's investment promotion agency (Invest in Canada - https://www.investcanada.ca ), to help attract Foreign Direct Investment into Canada. In the United States, the Trade Commissioner Service has 16 offices, including the Embassy of Canada to the U.S.

AREA OF SELECTION

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

All essential qualifications will be assessed. Methods of assessments and screening of candidates may include but are not limited to: verification of credentials, resume and letters of presentation; interviews, exams and practical tests; presentations or other types of assessments.

Education

This position requires:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the duties required by the position (such as business, economics, engineering, public affairs, law, and/or foreign relations) or a degree from an accredited university and a minimum of three years of relevant work experience.

Language

The Following languages and proficiency levels are required for this job. Candidates will be formally assessed or requested to provide proof of certification on these levels.

  • An advanced proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in English.


Experience

In order to perform the duties relevant to this job, the following experience is required.
  • Three years cumulative recent* experience delivering outcomes in international business development, international sales or foreign direct investment attraction in one or more of the following sectors: ICT, Life Sciences/health
  • Experience in managing client and stakeholder relationships and in providing client service support to customers/clients.
  • Experience in providing strategic advice, briefings, and written reports to management on international business issues.

*Recent is defined as within the last seven years.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
  • Ability to work in French.
  • Successful completion of a Master's degree or graduate degree in a field related to the position (as defined above).
  • Having an established network of contacts in a field related to the position (as defined above).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Canadian industries.


OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Operational requirements will be assessed on a ``meet/does not meet`` basis and can be used to determine right fit of a candidate for the position.
  • Hours of Work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 37.5 hours per week.
  • Overtime: Willingness to work overtime on occasion, sometimes on short notice.
  • Travel: This position requires travel within the region and occasional travel to Canada.
  • Location of work: Employees must be able to work in person in the office at the Consulate General of Canada in New York.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
  • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada.
