Full Job Description
About the role

D-Wave is seeking a Senior Systems Integration Engineer to support the development, integration, validation, and continuous improvement of complex quantum computing systems. This role sits at the intersection of electronics, mechanical, cryogenics, system software, service, production, and processor development.

You will help ensure that subsystem requirements, interfaces, diagnostics, test plans, and system configurations are clearly defined, validated, documented, and supportable across the full product lifecycle. Your work will help move systems from R&D through integration, commissioning, New Product Introduction, manufacturing, field support, and sustaining engineering.

This is a hands-on, cross-functional role for an experienced engineer who can solve complex system-level problems, connect technical details across hardware and software disciplines, and help improve system reliability, serviceability, and performance.

What you'll do

  • Lead system integration activities across electrical, mechanical, cryogenic, software, instrumentation, and control subsystems.
  • Work closely with the System Software team to define hardware/software interfaces, integration requirements, diagnostics, test workflows, and system behavior.
  • Translate R&D, software, service, production, and customer needs into clear system requirements, interface definitions, test plans, and documentation.
  • Support system bring-up, commissioning, validation, troubleshooting, upgrades, and sustaining engineering.
  • Develop and maintain system-level verification and validation plans, diagnostic procedures, configuration records, and integration documentation.
  • Investigate complex system issues, lead root-cause analysis, and drive corrective and preventive actions.
  • Partner with service and engineering teams to improve reliability, maintainability, diagnostics, troubleshooting workflows, and service readiness.
  • Participate in design reviews, integration reviews, FMEA, change reviews, and ECR/ECO processes.
  • Identify gaps in tools, processes, documentation, and system diagnostics; recommend and implement practical improvements.
  • Communicate technical risks, trade-offs, progress, and recommendations clearly to engineering teams and management.
  • Mentor junior team members and promote strong systems engineering practices.

What you'll bring

  • Degree or diploma in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, hardware integration, product development, validation, service engineering, field reliability, or a related multidisciplinary technical role.
  • Experience integrating complex hardware systems involving electrical, mechanical, software, controls, instrumentation, or cryogenic elements.
  • Strong understanding of requirements, interfaces, dependencies, configurations, failure modes, and system-level trade-offs.
  • Experience working with hardware/software interfaces, system diagnostics, control systems, or software-driven hardware platforms.
  • Experience with verification and validation planning, test execution, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with configuration management, engineering change processes, issue tracking, or product lifecycle workflows.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including requirements, procedures, test plans, validation reports, troubleshooting guides, and decision records.
  • Sound judgment, strong organization, and the ability to make progress with incomplete or changing information.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering, system software, service, production, operations, and scientific teams.
  • Hands-on mindset and interest in building, testing, diagnosing, and improving complex systems.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation and willingness to work flexible hours during busy periods.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites across North America and Europe, including short-term work assignments in the United States.

Bonus qualifications

  • Experience with cryogenic systems, vacuum systems, superconducting systems, scientific instrumentation, advanced electronics, RF/microwave systems, or machine control systems.
  • Experience with Python, C/C++, PLC logic, Linux/UNIX, data acquisition, test automation, system monitoring, or software/hardware integration.
  • Familiarity with FMEA, reliability engineering, serviceability, maintainability, incident response, or field support.
  • Experience with lab or field instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, temperature controllers, pressure systems, vacuum systems, or control hardware.
  • Knowledge of CSA, UL, CE, EMI, EMC, or related compliance standards.
  • Current or eligible registration as an EIT or P.Eng. with EGBC.
