Full Job Description
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver™-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and you will report to a Systems Engineer Lead.

You will:
  • Work with cross functional teams including software engineers, product managers, system safety, and operations leads to develop and implement requirements, system architecture, and verification strategy for rider safety, security, and compliance features on existing and new vehicle platforms
  • Create safety analysis independently or in collaboration with System Safety to drive performance requirements for new features
  • Lead comprehensive trade studies, gathering data from relevant stakeholder to inform decisions
  • Take ownership of the solution, considering applicability to long term goals, and appropriately use engineering judgement and experience to inform paths forward
  • Debug field issues to determine root cause and identify solutions with cross functional teams. Be the point person for retrospectives and implement improvements to test coverage and processes to prevent similar issues from happening in the future

You have:
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or other technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, software development, or related field
  • A systems engineering mindset and a proactive, data-driven approach to fixing problems
  • Ability to think about the rider and an understanding of what might pose a safety risk for a given feature
  • Experience performing or collaborating on safety analyses (e.g., Hazard and Risk Assessment, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis, System-theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), Safety of the Intended Function (SOTIF), etc.)
  • Aptitude to apply existing technical depth to new areas and learn quickly

We prefer:
  • Experience in safety critical aspects of the operation of fleets or delivery of production products at scale
  • Ability to write code for querying data sets (SQL) and creating dashboards
  • Experience working on features or products with a user experience focus
  • Experience defining requirements such as precision and recall for machine learning perception models
  • An ability to read C++ to understand feature implementation and debug issues more effectively
