Position Summary:We are seeking a Backup Systems Engineer to support national defense missions at the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific. The Backup Systems Engineer will lead the engineering, deployment, and continuous improvement of enterprise-scale backup and data protection solutions. This hands-on role focuses on designing and evolving Commvault-based backup environments, developing hardened implementation procedures aligned with Navy standards, and supporting modernization initiatives across cloud, automation, and datacenter operations
The Engineer will collaborate with architects, engineers, solution owners, and government stakeholders to select and implement appropriate protection strategies for mission-facing workloads. Responsibilities also include system documentation, training delivery, operational engineering support, and subject-matter expertise for Commvault Backup systems.
Position will be located at the NIWC Pacific Old Town Campus in San Diego, CA. This is an on-site role.
Must Have Requirements: - Active Secret-level security clearance or higher.
- High school diploma or GED.
- IAT Level II certification for Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (CSWF) compliance. Candidates must hold both an IA certification, such as Security+ CE or higher AND an Operating Environment (OE) certification, such as a Windows OS certification, CCNA, SolarWinds, or equivalent qualifying certification.
- 8 or more years of experience developing and administering enterprise backup platforms, with primary experience supporting Commvault, including CommCell, Media Agents, deduplication, encryption, and air-gap or immutability capabilities.
- Experience with additional backup tools, such as Veeam or Backup Exec.
- 5 or more years of experience supporting Windows Server networks in production environments, including Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, VSS, and storage services.
- 2 or more years of experience operating VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi, vCenter, VM backup and restore workflows, VM snapshots, Changed Block Tracking (CBT), and application-consistent backups.
- 2 or more years of PowerShell scripting experience for automation and operational tooling.
- Hands-on administration of Commvault and/or Rubrik at scale across multi-site, multi-tenant, and diverse workload environments.
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including routing, VLANs, firewalls, and secure data flows for backup networks.
- Experience developing technical documentation, including runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), architecture diagrams, and operational metrics.
- Ability to support on-site delivery and collaborate with government stakeholders at least two days per week, with additional on-site support as directed by the client.
- Ability to travel outside the continental United States (OCONUS) for trips typically lasting one to three weeks, up to approximately three times per year. Travel will generally be planned at least three months in advance.
Duties and Responsibilities: - Design and document best-practice data protection strategies for mission-facing workloads using Commvault.
- Develop hardened Commvault installation, configuration, and operational procedures aligned with Navy standards and security requirements.
- Engineer, deploy, administer, and continuously improve enterprise-scale backup and recovery solutions.
- Provide engineering support for operational network environments as needed.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, and solution owners to evaluate workload requirements and implement the most effective backup and recovery strategy.
- Support backup modernization efforts involving cloud technologies, automation, datacenter operations, and evolving data-protection capabilities.
- Create and maintain runbooks, SOPs, architecture diagrams, training materials, and operational performance metrics.
- Deliver training and provide subject-matter expertise on Commvault Backup systems, backup operations, restore processes, and recovery practices.
- Support VMware, Windows Server, storage, networking, and application teams in maintaining reliable and secure backup integrations.
- Participate in backup testing, restore validation, disaster recovery planning, and continuous improvement activities.
- Travel as needed to support OCONUS operational requirements.
