Full Job Description
Position Summary:

The Senior Superintendent is the Company's representative assigned responsibility and authority for daily coordination and direction of the project. Through pre-planning, the Senior Superintendent must formulate a plan on how to construct the project, and they must ensure that the daily and weekly activities are consistent with this plan. The Senior Project Manager or Project Manager and Senior Superintendent will work as a complementary team where the sum of their efforts is greater than their individual efforts. The Senior Superintendent is an experienced builder who is well versed in all aspects of Heavy construction including mechanical, pipe, dirt and concrete work. A Senior Superintendent can run the most complex and expensive projects that the company takes on with great efficiency and is able to maximize profit through pre-planning. The Senior Superintendent always presents themselves professionally and can handle themselves in front of Engineers & Owners. The Senior Superintendent has extensive experience in the day-to-day operations of CHC and always has the company's best interest at hand. The Senior Superintendent always has a learning attitude and is striving for ways to improve themselves and other team members.

Essential Functions:

  1. Safety - Safety planning is to be included in all pre-job planning and considered foremost in the daily operations. All projects, governmental and company safety regulations and requirements shall be enforced. Establish Crossland Heavy safety culture on the project.
  2. Quality - The Senior Superintendent is responsible for all quality control on the project, both company and subcontractors. Any repetitive quality problems with a subcontractor or vendor should be called to upper management's attention. The company has a policy and past record of providing high quality work, and this high-quality standard is to be maintained on each project.
  3. Job Planning - Responsible for the initial direction of the project and should be able to make course corrections during the project. They are responsible for the jobsite setup including laydown plan, material handling plan, and mobilization of equipment and labor.
  4. Scheduling - Actively engage in project scheduling to ensure ownership and alignment with the job planning objectives. Take responsibility for developing and executing smaller segments of the overall CPM schedule, typically represented as a six-week look-ahead plan.
  5. Coordinate and supervise all company workforces on the project. Responsible for the balance of labor force on the job, requests are made through the Area Superintendent for the addition and subtraction of labor.
  6. Develop Senior Superintendents, Superintendents, Trade Superintendents, Senior Field Engineers, Field Engineers, and other skilled personnel.
  7. Personnel evaluation, development, and retention. The Senior Superintendent will be consulted in the assignment of salaried staff. They are responsible for defining what is expected of (goal setting), providing feedback to, and evaluating salaried personnel under his or her direction. They are responsible for recommending promotion, transfers, or termination according to the project's needs and personnel evaluations.
  8. Subcontractor Coordination and Scheduling - Organize and lead weekly scheduling meetings with all subcontractors, ensuring a clear understanding of their scope of work, including both inclusions and exclusions.
  9. Develop form detailing and special construction methods for job efficiency.
  10. Maintain Precise Timekeeping and Cost Records - Ensure accurate documentation of time and costs, as your records could be used to inform bids for future projects.
  11. Study Variances carefully to determine areas needing special attention and initiate changes and procedures to bring costs back into budget. Know production rates for all labor items in the variance and coordinate production goals for all crews.
  12. Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination - Proactively expedite vendors and subcontractors on a daily and weekly basis. For major or unusual delivery issues, collaborate with the Project Manager to resolve performance challenges.
  13. Material Receiving - Be sure that material received is properly inspected for quantity and quality, and that the receiving tickets are properly signed, coded and uploaded to Procore.
  14. Equipment - Equipment needs should be reviewed with the project team to ensure that the right equipment is being utilized for the upcoming activities. Emphasis should be given to utilization of company-owned equipment. If the equipment is not available from company sources, the Superintendent may rent as required, coordinated through the Equipment Managing System. Equipment Maintenance and reporting is the responsibility of the Superintendent
  15. Owner Relations - Participate in Owner/Engineer/Contractor meetings and, in coordination with the Senior Project Manager or Project Manager, ensure the Owner and their representatives are promptly informed of schedule changes and potential conflicts. These relationships are essential to project and company success and must be treated as a top priority.
  16. Customer and Neighbor Relations - Be attuned to the unique needs of the customer and surrounding neighbors, fostering positive relationships and ensuring satisfaction throughout the project.
  17. Maintain Project Logs. Project logs or "paperwork" may be delegated to other employees, but the Senior Superintendent is to complete the daily report and the six-week schedule.
  18. Responsible for protection and care of company owned assets including tools and equipment.


In the absence of an Area Superintendent within the division, the Senior Superintendent may be required to assume certain responsibilities typically assigned to that role. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Collaborate with Senior Superintendents and Superintendents to manage division manpower, ensuring efficient allocation and transfer of personnel across jobsites as needed.
  2. Assess overall division manpower to identify hiring needs, then collaborate with the local HR assistant to specify the type and quantity of personnel required.
  3. Participate in bi-weekly Teams meetings with the General Superintendent and Area Superintendents to provide updates on division manpower. During these meetings, the General Superintendent will evaluate whether resources can be shared across divisions to optimize company-wide efficiency.
  4. Provide leadership in tracking and coordinating the schedules of Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Trade Superintendents, Senior Field Engineers and Field Engineers across all division projects, ensuring resources are used effectively and the teams remain aligned with division priorities.
  5. Monitor overall division workload and provide regular updates to the Division Manager, ensuring that sufficient work is secured and resources remain fully utilized.
  6. Organize and lead an annual Superintendents meeting in collaboration with the Division Manager, ensuring alignment on goals, priorities, and best practices.
  7. Attend intern outings and recruiting events, building relationships with interns and guiding them toward potential roles as Field Engineers.
  8. Project responsibilities take precedence over additional duties


Qualifications:

- Associates or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (Preferred).

- 10+ years of experience in heavy civil or water/wastewater treatment plant construction

- Proven experience managing large, complex construction projects

- Extensive knowledge of construction methods, materials, sequencing, and field operations.

- Demonstrated leadership experience developing Superintendents and field personnel (Preferred).

- Strong understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and production management

- OSHA 30 certification (Preferred).

- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites as required

Skills & Knowledge:

- Strong leadership and team development skills across multiple project teams

- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams

- Advanced knowledge of construction scheduling, production planning, and cost management

- Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Procore, P6) (Preferred)

- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities

- Deep understanding of safety practices, OSHA regulations, and compliance

- Attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills

- Commitment to quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement
