Job Title: Substation Engineer

Primary Function

Engineering professionals at Dashiell are responsible for the planning, design, and execution of high-voltage electrical infrastructure projects, including substations, transmission lines, and civil/structural systems. Depending on role and experience level, duties range from detailed design and technical analysis to project management, team supervision, and departmental leadership.

Duties & Responsibilities

Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
Technical and Design
• Develop, review, and track civil, structural, and electrical design documents for substation and transmission projects.
• Create engineered plans and specifications.
• Perform and verify engineering calculations including:
o Ground grid design and relay coordination
o Transformer sizing, load flow, and short circuit analysis
o Grading, drainage, and foundation design
o Structural loading, wind, and seismic analysis
• Apply engineering application software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, PLS-CADD, STAAD Pro, RISA 3D, or equivalent.
• Ensure design compliance with all applicable standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, AISC, ACI, ASCE, IBC, ASTM).

Project Execution
• Manage project scope, schedule, and budget to meet quality and profitability objectives.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams including engineers, designers, and drafters.
• Serve as primary technical contact for clients and vendors.
• Prepare and coordinate project schedules, budgets, and reports.
• Participate in site visits, coordination meetings, and customer presentations.
• Ensure proper document control and adherence to Dashiell's QA/QC procedures.

Leadership and Departmental Management
• Assign resources and manage workload across engineering teams.
• Monitor team performance and resolve resource or scheduling conflicts.
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards and company procedures.
• Mentor and develop staff through feedback, training, and performance evaluations.
• Champion innovation, process improvement, and standardization of work practices.
• Support proposal development and pricing efforts, ensuring technical accuracy and competitiveness.

Strategic and Senior-Level Functions
• Lead department initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and employee engagement.
• Support business development by participating in client meetings and proposal efforts.
• Oversee budgets, financial performance, and departmental forecasting.
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships across departments.
• Promote professional development, knowledge sharing, and training programs.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university. Must be a licensed professional engineer with over 15 years experience in the industry. If registered in a state other than where the engineer will practice, the employee must be able to obtain a license within one year of date of hire. Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in both substation engineering and design, along with the ability to oversee multiple projects, are required.

Skills:
Extensive knowledge of high-voltage (138kV and above) systems, substation equipment, and transmission components.
• Strong understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, three-phase systems, and power flow.
• Proficiency with engineering and project management software.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership abilities.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to lead multiple projects and teams concurrently.
• Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
Physical Requirements:
• Minimal physical effort; primarily office based.
• Must be able to sit and work on a computer for prolonged periods (8+ hours/day).
• Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds).
• Occasional travel for meetings, training, or site visits (~10%).
• May require use of PPE and steel-toed boots for site visits.
• Extended hours, including weekends, may be periodically required.

Compensation/Benefits

Compensation
$120,000 - $215,000 yearly
The compensation range for this position is compliant with all local and state regulations and is based on several factors such as work experience, education, qualifications, and internal and external market factors. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
