Full Job Description
As a Senior Staff Sustaining Engineer on the Stretch Actuation team you will help our Logistics robotics engineering team design and produce the next generation of advanced robots for warehouse automation. Leading continuous improvement for actuators, you will be directly responsible for conducting failure analysis and root cause analysis on fielded actuators; driving mitigations and long term corrections; and working with suppliers to continually refine and improve our designs.

Combining technical insights with strong communication skills, you will lead design decision making and facilitate effective coordination among team members and ODM partners. You will play a major role in planning and executing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), working with our Systems and Manufacturing Test teams to validate changes and Supplier Quality to drive those improvements into production. This role is fundamental to our ability to scale operations while continuously elevating the quality and reliability of our Stretch robot.

How You Will Make an Impact / Day-to-Day Activities
  • Take the lead in troubleshooting issues, identifying root causes, and implementing effective corrective and preventative solutions to enhance overall reliability.
  • Review and synthesize data on failures and issues in Jira, generating a deep understanding of the maturity of all aspects of our actuator products.
  • Propose and execute design changes/ECOs to correct defects and prevent future failures.
  • Create detailed CAD models, drawings, specifications, assembly documentation, and comprehensive test plans to ensure robust performance of actuation systems.
  • Work closely with ODMs to optimize component designs, ensure quality standards, and streamline production processes.


We Are Looking For / You Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering plus a minimum of 7 years of experience in a design, systems or sustaining engineering role.
  • Proven experience in design for complex mechatronic systems. Demonstrated proficiency in cross functional integration of mechanical, electrical, and software elements. This includes motors, bearings, encoders, gearboxes, power electronics, and sealing.
  • Strong ability with Root Cause Analysis and general problem solving methodologies.
  • Experience transitioning early-stage designs through New Product Introduction (NPI), Engineering Validation Testing (EVT), and Design Validation Testing (DVT) phases, ensuring smooth transition from concept to production.
  • Exceptional organization and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort with project management and a proven track record of autonomously managing large, complex projects, for which prioritization and delegation decisions were left to you.
  • Proficient CAD user
  • Experience with PLM systems


Nice to have:
  • Experience with Jira, JAMA and Smartsheets
  • Experience using CATIA CAD system
  • Experience using Arena and/or ENOVIA PLM systems

The base pay range for this position is between $134,000 to $165,000 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting. Boston Dynamics offers a generous Benefits package including medical, dental vision, 401(k), paid time off and a annual bonus structure.
