What we need
Symbotic is currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Bot Platform team . In this role you will develop software tools for monitoring, diagnostics, and system administration for our fleet of autonomous mobile robots for inventory distribution management. The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate in a highly multidisciplinary environment along with strong technical problem-solving skills and passion to tackle real world challenges in robotics.

What we do
The team is responsible for delivering solutions for the storage and retrieval use cases performed in a fully autonomous warehouse operating 100s of mobile robots at customer sites. The role requires excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate in a highly cross-functional environments along with strong technical problem-solving skills and passion to tackle real world challenges in robotics.

What you'll do
  • Build and maintain diagnostic, calibration, flashing, and command-simulation tooling for autonomous mobile robots, delivered on desktop and web platforms used by engineering, manufacturing, and field service teams
  • Develop monitoring and diagnostic applications to run on the embedded target to enable system introspection
  • Develop low-level hardware communication layers across PLC, CAN bus (Kvaser interface, CANopen SDO/PDO, motor-controller flashing protocols, custom in-house protocols), and serial peripheral buses
  • Design and ship REST services and IPC protocol stacks that expose firmware-layer operations plus cloud-backed configuration generation pipelines that transform engineering source data into ready-to-ship artifacts
  • Write production-grade Python 3.12+ and C++17+ code following established conventions
  • Diagnose and resolve real hardware issues on the manufacturing floor and in the field by tracing fault tables out of the PLC, debugging protocol edge cases, validating calibration of subsystems, and supporting technicians working on live vehicles
  • Serve as a technical lead by scoping and defining workstreams, guide project team members in their efforts, and work with the project management team to schedule and track progress
  • Lead design and architecture reviews to ensure that new features and code changes are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with best practices
  • Identify and monitor KPIs to evaluate and improve the performance of our robots and overall system solution
  • Be a proactive communicator who enjoys working closely with creative and technical peers
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers
  • Occasional (~10%) travel to customer sites is required


What you'll need
  • Bachelor, Masters, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Aerospace, or related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience in developing and delivering embedded software deployed in the real world
  • Knowledge of Python and C++
  • Experience with modern production-grade software development practices, QA processes, version control tools, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain and teach technical concepts to others


Our Environment:
  • Up to 10% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
  • The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $138,075.00 - $204,600.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
