Full Job Description
The Opportunity

Flock Safety is looking for a frontend-focused, Senior Software Engineer to join our Search team. Search is one of the most critical features at Flock, it's the tool our customers rely on every day to follow leads, identify patterns, and help keep their communities safer.

In this role, your focus will be heavily frontend-leaning (around 90%), but you'll maintain the fullstack context needed to build seamless end-to-end features. You'll be working on a high-traffic production system where the quality of your work has a direct impact on outcomes that matter. We need someone who cares as much about how something looks and feels as how it works, and who holds themselves and their teammates to a high standard. You'll champion the frontend architecture across a complex React/TypeScript/Node stack, collaborating closely with backend engineers, product, and design to shape the future of the Search experience.

The Skillset
  • Frontend Expertise: 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a deep mastery of modern frontend web technologies, design patterns, and user interface design using React and TypeScript.
  • Data Visualization: Experience with mapping libraries (e.g., Mapbox, Google Maps API) and/or complex data visualizations on maps.
  • Fullstack/Backend Context: Comfort working with Node.js / Express for web services and a solid understanding of general API design (e.g., REST, GraphQL, gRPC).
  • Microservice Awareness: Familiarity with core backend microservice concepts, including basic SQL (PostgreSQL or similar) and how clients call between services, so you can collaborate effectively with dedicated backend peers.
  • Problem Solving: A resourceful problem-solver mindset, excelling in ambiguous situations and taking initiative.
  • Growth Mindset: A love for coding, excitement about working on a fast-paced, constantly evolving product, and a commitment to continuous learning.
Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with AWS managed services (e.g., S3, API Gateway, SNS/SQS).
  • Experience optimizing frontend performance for high-traffic, data-heavy applications.

90 Days at Flock

The First 30 Days
  • Pair with each engineer on the Search team to learn the services we own and get to know your teammates
  • Review the existing architecture and participate in PR reviews regularly to understand current patterns
  • Push code to production early and begin picking up sprint tickets
  • Meet with product, design, and key partner teams to understand how customers use Search and what the business needs

First 60 Days: Deepen Ownership and Elevate the Team
  • Take on larger tasks spanning multiple repositories with increasing independence
  • Identify and suggest improvements to our systems and architecture based on what you've learned
  • Prioritize thorough PR reviews and lead at least one team-facing discussion, a tech talk, demo, or retro item
  • Participate in customer calls and start on-call rotations

90 Days and Beyond: Lead and Make an Impact
  • Represent the Search team on a cross-functional project and communicate progress back to your manager and teammates
  • Author or meaningfully contribute to an architecture document for a major feature
  • Serve as a technical point person for core Search features and propose solutions to user experience problems you've observed
  • Begin mentoring teammates and champion best practices in PR reviews across the team
