Senior Show Set Designer III - Creative Development

Role Description: Huitt-Zollars, Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Show Set Designer III with an advanced level (5-8 years) of experience to be located in Orlando, FL or Los Angeles, CA.

This position is anticipated to co-locate on-site within our client's office and client's staff in either Orlando or Los Angeles and/or work in-office at Huitt-Zollars Orlando or Los Angeles locations.

This role is responsible for designing the physical environments, scenic elements, and spatial storytelling components that bring themed entertainment, experiential environments, hospitality, and destination-based mixed-use projects to life. This position focuses on the development of immersive, guest-facing environments that support narrative, atmosphere, and experiential cohesion within the built environment.

This full-time role includes creative development, environmental design, and interdisciplinary coordination. Duties include but are not limited to, development of scenic concepts, spatial layout and environmental storytelling, coordination with architectural and engineering teams, and support of design documentation and fabrication. This role works in alignment with the Vice President of Creative Development and other Creative team members to translate creative intent into coordinated, buildable design solutions while maintaining design integrity throughout all phases of project delivery.

Location: On-site/in-office and co-located with client and client staff in either Orlando, FL or Los Angeles, CA and/or Huitt-Zollars Orlando, FL or Los Angeles, CA offices (no relocation or fully remote arrangements offered)

Senior Show Set Designer III Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Perform at a competent level and skill in environmental storytelling, design, visual & spatial layout, collaboration, communication, problem solving, planning and organizing, and adaptability within teams and creative work environments.
  • Leads defined scopes, mentors junior staff, and contributes to design direction of immersive environmental designs including scenic elements, themed architecture overlays, and guest-facing environments.
  • Translate creative concepts and narrative intent into physical spatial layouts and scenic design solutions.
  • Design and support development of queue environments, ride scenes, scenic transitions, and feature elements.
  • Coordinate environmental storytelling elements including materials, textures, lighting intent, and atmospheric details.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and technical teams to ensure integration of scenic design within the built environment.
  • Support development of design documentation including plans, elevations, sections, and detail drawings.
  • Efficient use and working knowledge of Rhino, Revit, Lumion, Adobe suite, Microsoft Office to produce quality work.
  • Assist in coordination with specialty vendors, fabricators, and show system partners.
  • Participate in design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, and internal team discussions.
  • Support fabrication and installation phases including shop drawing review, mock-ups, and field coordination.
  • Ensure alignment between design intent, operational requirements, and project constraints.
  • Communicate design ideas clearly through drawings, models, and visual presentations.
  • Contributes to the development and execution of immersive, story-driven environments.
  • Ensures environmental design supports overall guest experience and narrative intent.
    Supports coordination between creative, architectural, and technical disciplines.
  • Contributes to successful project delivery measured by design quality, coordination, and alignment with project goals.
  • Assists in maintaining consistency and quality across all scenic and environmental design elements.
  • Supports adherence to Huitt-Zollars' business processes and quality management systems.
  • Participates in design reviews and quality control processes.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry trends, tools, and best practices in themed environment design.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Design, Architecture, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5-8 years of relevant Creative Development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop spatial design and environmental storytelling concepts.
  • Portfolio showcasing design ability, visual storytelling, and spatial composition.
  • Proficiency in Rhino, Revit, Lumion, Adobe suite, Microsoft Office. Enscape, 3DS Max, and/or Maya Zbrush a plus.
  • Ability to translate conceptual ideas into clear design solutions.
  • Experience working with architectural teams and integrated project environments is preferred.
  • Familiarity with drafting, modeling, and visualization tools.
  • Strong visual, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Detail-oriented and proactive approach to design and coordination.
