Job Summary:

The Senior Safety Specialist helps develop and execute the safety component of an Environmental, Safety, and Health (EHS) program. This involves administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position requires practical application of occupational safety and related disciplines for managing safety and health aspects of a project or facility. The position reports to an EHS Lead or the Project EHS Manager. #LI-AM3

Major Responsibilities:

  • Executes assignments involving significant safety and health issues and risks, using judgment and experience in the application of scientific techniques and plans to reduce the potential for adverse impacts.
  • Integrates safety and health requirements into proposals, planning documents, design, construction, commissioning and startup, operations, schedules, procurement, and subcontract documents.
  • Provides input on bid decisions, proposal development, and estimates (scope, constraints, schedules, budgets) with respect to integration and compliance with safety and health requirements.
  • Interprets requirements and provides technical assistance within EHS teams and to other project groups regarding risk and hazard assessment, plan preparation, and EHS program execution.
  • Researches issues and regulatory requirements, performs studies and risk assessments, and prepares documentation and reports.
  • Performs safety studies, risk assessments, and other safety and health reviews.
  • Drafts and helps implement the project Safety and Health Management Plan, associated plans and procedures, and training program.
  • Helps establish emergency preparedness and performs incident investigations. Helps identify stakeholders and resolve their concerns.
  • Provides input to other project groups, so that safety and health requirements are integrated within project planning, design, construction plans, procurement, and subcontracts.
  • Participates in meetings, as required, with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of safety and health requirements.
  • Conducts inspections and monitoring to help evaluate EHS performance, identify corrective actions, and confirm compliance with contract, regulatory, project, and Bechtel requirements.
  • Develops safety and health communication through publications, flyers, posters, signs, banners, and other communication media.
  • Analyzes data, tracks EHS performance and trends, and prepares technical reports.
  • Supports other EHS team members and tasks associated with all three EHS disciplines


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in occupational safety, health, or a science-related discipline from an accredited university or college with 6 or more years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in one of the same disciplines with 8 or more years of relevant experience; or an Associate's degree (or equivalent) in one of the same disciplines with 10 or more years of relevant experience; or 12 or more years of relevant safety or health experience.


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Analytical skills related to sampling, monitoring, and recordkeeping.
  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed, and a wide range of tasks.
  • Valid driver's license.


Additional Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 45001 Management System standards.
  • Specialized technical skills and knowledge related to an applicable safety or health discipline.
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
