Huawei Canada has an immediate Permanent opening for a Senior Researcher.

About the job:
  • Define and advance research directions in computer vision, spatial perception, and human-centered AI.
  • Develop algorithms for 2D/3D scene understanding, tracking, hand and gesture recognition, depth estimation, and real-time reconstruction.
  • Develop efficient small-model pipelines for real-time detection, tracking, temporal modeling, and interaction-state recognition.
  • Integrate vision foundation models, VLMs, and LLMs with lightweight perception components to enable spatial reasoning and agentic workflows.
  • Optimize end-to-end vision systems for accuracy, latency, power, memory, and hardware constraints.
  • Establish datasets, evaluation frameworks, success metrics, and technical milestones.
  • Build high-quality prototypes, support product integration, and contribute to design reviews and mentoring.


The total target annual compensation for this position ranges from $127,000 - $225,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

About the ideal candidate:
  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, AI, or a related field, or a master's degree with substantial industry R&D experience.
  • 5+ years of applied R&D experience in computer vision, spatial computing, robotics, or intelligent devices.
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex perception or machine-learning systems from research through product delivery.
  • Deep expertise in several areas, including detection, segmentation, tracking, hand pose estimation, 3D vision, camera geometry, and sensor calibration.
  • Experience developing and deploying compact models using distillation, pruning, quantization, ONNX, TensorRT, TFLite, OpenVINO, or NPU acceleration.
  • Strong Python and C/C++ skills with experience building real-time video-processing pipelines.
  • Track record demonstrated through shipped products, impactful prototypes, patents, or publications, with strong collaboration and mentoring skills.
