A Day in the Life

The Cardiac Surgery Therapies (CST) Operating Unit develops technologies to support cardiac surgeons and care teams in treating cardiovascular disease. The organization partners across research, engineering, clinical, and regulatory functions to advance technologies from concept through commercialization, with a focus on improving procedural outcomes and patient care.

This position is based in San Diego, California, and is eligible for remote work within the United States. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and stakeholders across multiple locations and includes up to 10% travel as needed to support project activities, team meetings, and business objectives.

The Senior Research & Development Engineer will contribute to the design, development, and advancement of cardiovascular medical technologies by applying scientific and engineering expertise to research initiatives and product development programs. This role will collaborate with cross-functional partners to investigate complex technical questions, generate data-driven insights, and translate research findings into product solutions that support clinical and commercial objectives.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design and execute research studies to evaluate biological, physiological, or engineering questions related to product development initiatives.
  • Develop and implement experimental protocols, test methods, and data analysis approaches to support technical decision-making.
  • Lead technical investigation and troubleshooting activities to identify root causes and resolve complex product or research challenges.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, clinical, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing partners, throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data and communicate findings through technical reports, presentations, and design documentation.
  • Support the development, verification, and optimization of products, processes, and technologies from concept through commercialization.
  • Contribute technical expertise to research and development programs, including activities associated with preclinical studies, clinical evaluations, or product performance assessments.
  • Translate research discoveries and technical findings into practical product solutions that address unmet clinical needs.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of relevant research and development experience, OR Master's degree with 2+ years of relevant research and development experience, OR PhD in a scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing, executing, and analyzing scientific or engineering studies in a research and development environment.
  • Experience generating technical documentation, reports, and data-driven recommendations to support product development decisions.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to advance research, product development, or technology initiatives.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience within the medical device, biotechnology, life sciences, or healthcare industry.
  • Experience supporting regulated product development activities within a quality management system.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular therapies, cardiac surgery technologies, or related clinical applications.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, experimental design, and interpretation of complex datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to the development and commercialization of new technologies or products.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$105,600.00 - $158,400.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range applies across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and certain locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
