A Day in the Life
The Surgical Robotics Group strives to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions. SURGICAL INNOVATIONS set the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) by creating innovative surgical products and services that focus on obesity and diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, abdominal wall, pelvic region, and the head and neck.

As a Senior R&D Engineer, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather information and data related to reported failures. You will perform detailed failure analyses by utilizing investigative techniques such as the "Cause Map" or Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to uncover underlying issues. Your role also involves analyzing trends in reported failures to identify potential areas of improvement. Collaborating with product owners and design teams to integrate reliability enhancements and effectively communicating investigation outcomes to stakeholders and affected customers will be key aspects of your responsibilities.

This is an onsite role at our North Haven, CT site.

You will:
  • Conduct in-depth failure analysis to identify root causes and contributing factors
  • Analyze trends in reported failures to identify areas of improvement
  • Categorize and prioritize customer complaints for investigation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather relevant data and insights
  • Collaborate with product owners and design teams to enhance product reliability
  • Communicate investigation results to stakeholders and customers
  • Participate in regular team meetings to share insights and contribute to improvement strategies


Must Have:
  • A Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of experience or Master's degree with minimum 2 years experience, OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience, (experience to include doing root cause investigations).
  • Degree shall be in a technical discipline, e.g. Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical, Software or Mechanical Engineering)


Nice to have
  • Experience with Medical Product verification and FDA guidance
  • Background in robotics and mechatronics
  • Work experience in highly regulated industries such as medical or military
  • Experience in developing automation scripts to analyze test data
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and modeling techniques
  • Knowledgeable of Linux OS, Matlab, Python
  • Ability to work with QA to ensure system integration procedures meet Quality and Regulatory needs
  • Ability to manage, track and upgrade multiple hardware and software configurations
  • Ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines to drive resolution of issues
  • Experience with product design and improvement initiatives
  • Knowledge of industry best practices for reliability and performance engineering
  • Previous experience in triage or issue categorization processes
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to conduct in-depth root cause analysis using log data in complex robotic system
  • Passion for continuous improvement in process, troubleshooting techniques and root cause investigation methodology, such as "cause map"
  • Experience with integrating hardware and software in complex robotic system
  • Experience with data analysis and trend identification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to lead or work effectively with cross-functional teams


For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$107,200.00 - $160,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
