Full Job Description
Job Summary

This posting is intended to gather expressions of interest from Track Design Engineers for anticipated opportunities expected to arise over the next 3-6 months. While an immediate vacancy may not be available, we are building relationships with talented professionals who are interested in joining our Rail + Transit team as new projects and hiring needs materialize.

TYLin is seeking an experienced Senior Track and Civil Engineer to join our growing Rail + Transit team in the Pacific Northwest. This role is ideal for a rail engineering professional with approximately 8-12 years of experience who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to lead track and civil design within complex, multidisciplinary transportation projects.

You will play an important role in the planning, design, and delivery of rail and transit infrastructure throughout the Pacific Northwest and across the U.S. Working alongside project managers, engineers, architects, and other technical specialists, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle - from planning and preliminary engineering through final design, procurement, and construction support.

The ideal candidate brings strong experience in track alignment, geometry, corridor integration, and multidisciplinary coordination, with exposure to light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, freight rail, or rail yards and maintenance facilities.

This position offers an opportunity to contribute to major transportation programs in markets such as Washington and Oregon, while also supporting TYLin's broader national Rail + Transit practice.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

What You'll Do
  • Serve as a senior technical resource for track and civil design on major rail and transit projects in the Pacific Northwest and across the U.S.
  • Lead the development of horizontal and vertical track alignments, turnouts, crossovers, special trackwork, and track layouts for stations, corridors, yards, and maintenance facilities.
  • Develop, review, and oversee engineering plans, specifications, design criteria, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Support and lead corridor studies, feasibility assessments, constructability reviews, design alternatives, phasing, staging, and maintenance-of-way planning.
  • Coordinate closely with signaling, traction power, overhead catenary systems (OCS), communications, civil, structural, geotechnical, and other disciplines to develop integrated project solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and quality control throughout planning, preliminary engineering, final design, and construction support.
  • Evaluate existing rail infrastructure and operational constraints and develop practical design solutions that consider safety, constructability, maintainability, and service continuity.
  • Work directly with clients, transit agencies, railroads, contractors, and regulatory authorities to resolve technical issues and support project decisions.
  • Support projects involving light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, streetcar, freight rail, and rail yards/maintenance facilities.
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers, helping to build technical capability within the Rail + Transit team.
  • Support business development activities, including proposals, technical presentations, client meetings, and strategic pursuits.
  • Contribute to TYLin's continued development of best practices in track design, rail corridor integration, constructability, and multidisciplinary project delivery.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Approximately 8+ years of progressive experience in rail track and civil engineering.
  • Experience delivering rail infrastructure projects involving light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, freight rail, or rail yards and maintenance facilities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state, or the ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity.
  • Strong technical knowledge of track geometry, horizontal and vertical alignment, corridor design, special trackwork, and rail infrastructure integration.
  • Experience developing and reviewing engineering plans, specifications, technical reports, and design documentation.
  • Proficiency with industry design tools such as Bentley OpenRail, OpenRoads, InRoads, MicroStation, Civil 3D, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of applicable U.S. standards and guidelines, including AREMA, FRA requirements, and relevant state and local agency standards.
  • Experience coordinating with rail systems disciplines including signaling, OCS, traction power, communications, and other rail systems.
  • Understanding of rail operations, constructability, staging, maintenance-of-way requirements, and operational constraints.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, project managers, technical teams, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical work and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with Pacific Northwest transportation agencies such as Sound Transit, King County Metro, TriMet, WSDOT, ODOT, Amtrak, or regional/local transit agencies is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with Class I or short-line freight railroads is also highly desirable.
