Position SummaryThe primary responsibility of this role is to ensure the consistent and timely launch of new products, with sales and marketing activities aligned to the launch schedule. The
Sr. R&D Manager leads both cross-functional process management and core R&D activities, working closely with internal teams and collaborating with Calbee Japan as needed. As part of a multi-functional business team, this role manages technical resources across a portfolio of projects. The position also involves evaluating ingredients, technologies, and processing equipment to improve cost efficiency, production performance, and food safety.
Key ResponsibilitiesInnovation & Pipeline Execution- Lead the development and commercialization of new products within assigned categories.
- Translate consumer insights and project briefs into practical product designs and formulations.
- Support and follow stage-gate processes to ensure timely and efficient product launches.
- Identify and apply appropriate technologies and processes to meet product and cost targets.
Product Maintenance & Quality- Execute product optimization, reformulation, and cost reduction projects.
- Ensure products meet quality, food safety, labeling, and regulatory requirements.
- Work closely with Operations and QA to support trials, scale-ups, and issue resolution.
Technical Documentation & Processes- Maintain accurate documentation for formulations, specifications, and processes.
- Ensure compliance with internal systems and reporting standards.
Equipment & Technology Support- Support the maintenance and proper use of R&D equipment and tools.
- Contribute to the evaluation of new equipment and technologies as needed.
Global Collaboration- Collaborate with overseas Calbee branches on specific projects and technical exchanges.
- Support the implementation of global technologies and formulations in the U.S.
Team Contribution & Development- Support team development by sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
- Provide guidance to junior team members and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
Required Qualifications and Skills- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, or a related field (Ph.D. a plus).
- 10+ years of R&D experience in the food & beverage industry, with some experience leading projects or small teams.
- Proven experience in product development from concept through commercialization.
- Solid understanding of food safety, regulatory requirements, and technical documentation.
- Experience working on cross-functional projects and supporting production trials.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams.
- Passion for consumer-focused innovation and continuous product improvement.
Work Environments and Physical Demands- Work performed in office and production environments with moderate to loud noise levels.
- Must be able to sit frequently, stand/walk occasionally, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to taste and evaluate a wide range of food products.
- Handle allergens (dairy, tree nuts, soy, wheat, sesame, mustard, fish, crustacean) with appropriate PPE.
- Travel up to 30% to Fairfield HQ, the other manufacturing sites, vendors, and trade shows.
- Specific vision abilities include the ability to read and analyze data in hard copy and on a computer screen, measure or identify using eyesight and adjust vision focus.
