About the role

Senior Publisher, Computer Science Journals

We are seeking a Senior Publisher to manage and strategically develop a portfolio of proprietary hybrid and fully open access Computer Science journals published under the Springer brand.Reporting to an Executive Publisher, you will be accountable for the strategic direction, performance, and long-term success of the portfolio. As the primary publishing contact, you will work closely with Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board Members, colleagues across Springer Nature, and the wider research community.

The successful candidate will be proactive, collaborative, commercially aware, and confident using data and market insights to identify opportunities and deliver sustainable journal growth.

This is a hybrid working position offered in our New York or London office. The location(s) strategy supports team structure and aligns business needs.

Role Responsibilities:

• Lead the strategic development, growth, and positioning of a portfolio of Computer Science journals, aligning journal plans with portfolio and divisional objectives.

• Develop and implement journal development plans using performance data, market intelligence, and community feedback to strengthen quality, visibility, reputation, and competitive positioning.

• Identify and pursue growth opportunities through emerging research areas, thematic collections, commissioning, Editorial Board development, and new journal or product initiatives.

• Build and maintain strong relationships with Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board Members, researchers, and other stakeholders, ensuring engagement with journal objectives.

• Plan and facilitate meetings with editors and Editorial Boards, ensuring agreed actions and priorities are delivered.

• Represent Springer Nature and the journal portfolio at conferences, institutional visits, and other external engagements.

• Monitor developments in the research community and publishing landscape, translating insights into actionable recommendations.

• Monitor and report on key performance indicators, including submissions, publications, transfers, peer-review performance, and turnaround times.

• Collaborate with publishing teams and other departments to resolve issues, improve workflows, and enhance the experience of authors, reviewers, and editors.

• Support the consistent application of editorial policies, publication ethics, and research integrity standards, including the resolution of complex editorial matters.

• Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, contract renewals, commercial planning, and other portfolio-management activities.

• Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives across Springer Nature.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

• Degree-level education or equivalent relevant professional experience.

• Proven experience managing and developing scholarly journals within the academic publishing industry.
• Strong understanding of scholarly publishing, including hybrid and fully open access models.
• Experience building productive relationships with Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Boards, researchers, and internal stakeholders.
• Knowledge of peer review, editorial policies, publication ethics, and research integrity.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate data and market insights into effective actions.

• Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder-management skills.

• Proven ability to manage competing priorities, deliver projects to completion, and adapt in a fast-changing environment.

• Sound judgement, diplomacy, and confidence in handling complex or sensitive situations.

• Strong organizational skills and confidence using publishing systems, reporting tools, and digital platforms.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a global team.

• Experience providing guidance, mentoring, or coaching to junior publishing colleagues and supporting team development.

• Experience contributing to portfolio-level strategy and aligning journal development with broader business objectives.

• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Desirable

• Academic, research, or publishing experience in Computer Science.

• Practical experience developing both hybrid and fully open access journals.

• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, contract negotiations, or other commercial aspects of journal publishing.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
