Mission Overview & Responsibilities:

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Program Manager.

As a Senior Program Manager, you will support software development squads in developing initiative milestones and managing cross-team dependencies. Senior Program managers are core members of their initiative teams, expected to identify issues, drive solutions, and negotiate scope or timelines to advance an initiative.You will drive transparency and alignment across teams by facilitating seamless collaboration through optimized communication processes and tools.

This is a hybrid, individual contributor role based in our New York City office.

Responsibilities:
  • Initiative Leadership - Manage various types of software development initiatives from inception through completion. Identify issues between competing interests to create alignment on priority, scope and realistic timelines.
  • Collaboration - Guide the team and key stakeholders to navigate challenges on the road to successful delivery. Influence teams through servant-leadership.
  • Visibility - Ensure shared understanding of initiative objectives and success criteria across the entirety of the initiative team. Drive a free flow of information with and among stakeholders on all matters.
  • Transparency - Track and communicate initiatives status, risks, and emergent issues. Organize complicated information so that varying stakeholders can readily access it and keep it current with minimal overhead.
  • Continuous Improvement - Help identify systemic issues, process problems, and other risks and work with the appropriate colleagues to find resolutions. Facilitate retrospectives at the initiative level, turn the output into concrete improvements in process.
  • Impediment Removal - Actively seek out, track and escalate impediments to the team's throughput and barriers to initiatives completion.
  • Communication - Communicate with technical and non-technical contributors, and between initiative teams and senior leadership.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to a Director of Program Management in the PMO.

Basic Qualifications:
  • 8+ years experience in program management
  • 5+ years running complex software development programs
  • Experience translating high-level strategy into actionable updates for technical teams, cross-functional partners, and executives
  • Experience balancing longer-term strategy with shorter-term execution
  • Expert in development practices and knowledge of Jira, Google Workspace, and other program management tools
  • Experience presenting complex information to diverse audiences

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience configuring and incorporating generative AI tools, AI-powered agents, and automations into daily program management workflows to enhance efficiency while maintaining human oversight and judgment
  • Comfort evaluating and piloting emerging AI capabilities in partnership with engineering, data, and various stakeholders

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$140,000-$167,000 USD

Additional Compensation and Benefits

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
