What You'll Do
As a Senior Operations Accountant, you will perform complex accounting activities that support the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of the organization's financial operations. This role is responsible for preparing, analyzing, and reconciling general ledger accounts, supporting life insurance cash processing, and ensuring daily accounting activities are completed accurately and on time. You will also partner across Finance, Information Technology, and other business areas to resolve accounting issues, improve processes, and strengthen financial controls.
You'll partner with the Accounting Operations Manager and a collaborative accounting team to lead projects, implement system enhancements, provide technical guidance, and drive initiatives that improve automation, operational efficiency, and accounting processes. You'll leverage your accounting expertise to solve complex problems, strengthen financial controls, and serve as a trusted resource across the department.
Position Responsibilities
- Support daily accounting operations by monitoring key accounting activities, resolving issues, and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and process effectiveness.
- Prepare, maintain, and reconcile complex general ledger accounts, investigating and resolving discrepancies in collaboration with internal business partners, departments, and financial institutions.
- Manage fixed asset and capital lease accounting, including monthly and quarterly reconciliations, accounting entries, and related reporting.
- Prepare recurring fixed asset schedules, management reports, and supporting documentation for leadership, governance reporting, and audit activities.
- Partner with Information Technology, Financial Analysis, and other business areas to support capital project accounting, expense allocations, and accurate financial reporting.
- Analyze and support life insurance cash processing activities, ensuring financial transactions are recorded accurately and completed in a timely manner.
- Lead or contribute to accounting projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives that strengthen automation, operational efficiency, and internal controls.
- Support procurement and accounts payable system administration, helping ensure operational continuity and the accurate completion of key administrative responsibilities.
- Provide operational support for the Accounting Operations Manager by helping coordinate daily priorities and maintaining continuity of critical accounting activities.
- Review accounting reports, travel and entertainment expenses, credit card transactions, and tax-related filings to promote accuracy, compliance, and timely resolution of issues.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance accounting procedures, process documentation, and departmental operating guides to support consistency, compliance, and audit readiness.
- Share technical knowledge and provide guidance to team members to support onboarding, learning, and the effective use of accounting systems and processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to resolve complex accounting issues, manage competing priorities, and deliver accurate financial information to stakeholders.
- Communicate accounting information clearly and professionally with stakeholders at all levels to support informed decision-making and effective business partnerships.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional accounting experience.
- 5+ years of professional accounting experience, including general ledger accounting and account reconciliations.
- Experience preparing, analyzing, and reconciling general ledger accounts and other financial transactions.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel and accounting software to prepare, analyze, and maintain financial records.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with project accounting, fixed asset accounting, or capital project tracking.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP/STAT).
- Experience supporting accounting system implementations, process improvements, or automation initiatives.
- Experience preparing audit schedules, supporting internal or external audits, or researching and resolving complex accounting discrepancies.
- Experience providing guidance, training, or knowledge sharing to colleagues or team members.
- Experience working in the insurance, financial services, banking, or another regulated industry.
