JOB DUTIES: Join our team as a Senior Medical Director for Behavioral Health Services! At HHSC Kaua'i Region, we are committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care, and in this full-time leadership position, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our behavioral health programs, providing clinical oversight and strategic direction across both inpatient and outpatient services. You will be instrumental in addressing a wide range of psychiatric needs, including general adult and adolescent psychiatry, substance abuse disorders, medication-assisted treatments, and other behavioral conditions. This role requires you to deliver a minimum of 24 hours per week in direct patient care, ensuring high-quality treatment and support for our patients while leading and inspiring a dedicated team of professionals.
Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance our behavioral health programs and improve patient outcomes, as well as collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care for all patients. Please note that this position is regional and may require long hours, weekends, and holiday work, along with travel to various facilities within the region to meet patient care needs.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.
EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited medical or osteopathic school with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree.
LICENSURE: - A current license to practice medicine in the State of Hawai'i is required. The physician must be duly licensed as a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy and approved for Active Staff membership and clinical privileges on the Hospital's Medical Staff in accordance with the Hospital's Medical Staff bylaws and Rules and Regulations. The physician is also required to maintain Active Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges at the Hospital throughout the term of this Agreement; AND
- Membership in good standing with Kaua'i Medical Associates, an independent physician association, is required; AND
- A current, valid State of Hawai'i type #3 driver's license is preferred; AND
- Current registration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and a current State Controlled Substance license from the State of Hawai'i Department of Public Safety's Narcotics Enforcement Division (NED) are mandatory.
CERTIFICATION:- Board certification in Psychiatry or a related field is required.
- Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) in Basic Life Support (adults, child, infant, etc.) for Healthcare Workers AND Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) are required (candidates for certain specialties may be required to possess current certifications issued by the AHA in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP));
- Additional certifications or training in addiction medicine, clinical leadership, or public health are preferred.
- Completion of continuing education in rural medicine practices is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: - Proven clinical experience in behavioral health or psychiatry, including a leadership or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated expertise in program development and quality improvement initiatives, and clinical oversight.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth knowledge of behavioral health treatment modalities, mental health issues, and substance abuse disorders.
- Comprehensive understanding of regulatory standards, clinical guidelines, and accreditation processes.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Proficient in electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation practices.
- Excellent bedside manner and commitment to patient-centered care.
CREDENTIALING: Applicants must be fully credentialed by the HHSC Kaua'i Region Medical Staff Administration department before employment.
